Harbinger
So my front bumper sits crooked -- Got around to looking at this and it looks like the bolt holding it on on the right side (facing the front of the truck) has broken off, leaving half the bolt sticking out of the nut, and nothing to hold the bumper on. I realize I could probably get this out through various methods and re-mount it. But When I put on my body lift here in a few weeks (sent out the money order yesterday :cool2: ) won't I be relocating the bumper to a diffrent mounting point? Basically would I be wasting my time clearing the broken bolt?
88pathoffroad
Yeah, probably. If you don't have access to a welder, you're gonna have a flimsy, crooked bumper anyway. The old body lift kit's bumper brackets were a crock of crap and didn't work. My front bumper is tack-welded directly to the frame on both sides with a couple of supports welded in underneath it. Rock-solid that way.
Harbinger
I don't have access to a welder but I know a friend of a friend who would probably help me for a small fee. Have you run into any problems with it being permanently mounted like that?
Vsicks Pathy
If your lift is going to be 3", for example, rework your OEM brackets to suit. I did it with mine and it was fine. I have a bullbar but the princible should be the same.
88pathoffroad
No problems whatsoever. I've even rear-ended someone once and it's still straight.
GrimGreg
I wish they gave us brakets like the HB kits come with, theay are actually a good relocation bracket, 1 piece/side, rather than 2 worthless straps/ side.
88pathoffroad
Actually, I put them on Rami's Pathy today and the relocation brackets work halfway decent. The new Trailmaster kit comes with 3/16" thick relocation brackets. My old-ass Trailmaster kit came with 1/8" brackets. The new ones work a LOT better, and the bumper is straight and pretty sturdy. Not as sturdy as stock, but better than nothing.
Harbinger
*crosses fingers* I do hope the Trailmaster kit I have en-route is a newer one, hard to tell when its bought second hand.
GrimGreg
I never used a Trailmaster lift, just the Performance Accesory ones.
Clayman
I just built a bumper for my rig. The factory POS brackets went in the garbage!!!! What the hell are those supposed to do? Might as well have no bumper at all! I understand the whole aborbing the impact theory... but wholly crap! those things are nothing but decoration. I made new 1/4" ones and welded them to the frame. I cut some holes in them so they would crush under impact...(from a car, not a shopping cart!) I'm eventually going to put on a winch, so I had to at least make something that wouldn't tear off the front end. Anyways... good luck with you project man! I would deffinitely consider running it by a good welder though. tinfoil bumpers aren't good! Take Care, Clay
Mr. Pickles
I tacked mine to the frame as well, or actually, slipped a guy $10 while he had a spare moment at a local muffler shop. 5 min or so and it was rock solid. We went in inside the fender well right where you can first see the bracket come down. Solves the lack of a welder for sure.
