Tips for a new 94 owner.

Haven't even picked it up yet and already thinking how I am going to tear it apart. Things I need to do:

 

1. Install new stereo and my 40 Channel UHF Radio. So is there any little secrets that would be good to know about taking the dash/radio area apart?

 

2. Want to install a 12V outlet in the cargo area for a car fridge.

 

3. Bigger tires. Tires on it a brand new so it will be awhile before I go bigger. Depends how impatient I get. Can I fit 30's or 31's with minimal effort in the suspension department? If I mod too much I might end up being single again! The missus will say If/when I go bigger how do you correct the speedo? Is it just a different tooth count speedo gear? Or is it electronic?

 

I think that's about it for now. But give me time!

It has started already. LOL.

 

The centre dash is simple to get out. Pull off the knobs, take out the ashtray and remove all of the Philip head screws. WARNING! Be very careful of the vents. They break easily.

 

Have fun running the 12V supply to the back. The 2 door has the wiring running on the floor (passenger side) I hope this has been improved with the 4 door.

 

Unless you plan to spend money, don't do a suspension lift. Lift the body to get larger tyres on it.

How much body lift for 31's? I remember saying this long ago with my Jeep, but here goes "I'll never run anything larger that 31's".

Nothing for 31's. But a 2 or 3 inch lift will always come in handy. You know, when you DO upsize.

What the final verdict on timing belts. I think it was that a 94 would have a 100,000 mile timing belt? The Pathy I bought had it changed 25,000 kilometers ago.

I think yours in electronic.

 

The Pathy came out with little tyres. About 20 inch I think. I have got 33's on the old girl and it is only 10K's out. My GPS tells me so.

Mine's 5 MPH off @ 55 MPH on 33's, so I'm actually going 60 when it indicates 55. It reads slow, so go just under your speed limit if you go with the 31's. I had 31's originally. It's not that big of a change.

 

For the 12V outlet, simply find the spot you want it, cut a hole for it, then run a single 12 gauge wire to the rear under the carpet and inside the wallpanel from either your fuse panel or the battery. Ground the outlet to the body securely and you're done.

i am on 31s and you really don't need anything but you'll probably rub a little here and there but no big deal.. i am off by 2-3 mi/h.. i figure if i go with what the speed on the speedo i should be ok.

 

screw the locker, get a winch... hehehehe

Not much to winch from where I drive! Looks easy to drive but it gets pretty soft sometime. And those sea weed traps can be killers! 4 foot wash out, tide deposits seaweed in the hole and covers it with a thin layer of sand. Looks ok until you drive over it!

That thin sand will be quicksand soon.

Hey don't laugh I got my Quad bike that way!!! Bought my son(he's 5) one first. And of course how could I take him out riding if I didn't have one too?

The toothpick-lookin thing under my front bumper in my signature picture is a 6-foot utility pole anchor with the anchor cut off and the tip chisel-pointed(that took a while, lemme tell you). Pound that puppy into the sand until it's only sticking out about 4" and you've got an anchor. Use a large wrench or stick to twist it back and forth and it'll come out of the sand by hand when you're done winching yourself out.

Well I don't have the best track record with my local law enforcement professionals. So a correct speedo for me is handy. Been to see this guy a couple of times!

You can get different speedo drive gears from Nissan that will correct your speedo reading. I dunno what you've got to begin with, so I guess you'd have to get under there and pull your original one to count the teeth. I could do it too, but I don't much care, heh.

I only have 31" tires, up from the 235's. My speedometer reads about 22 MPH when I am really going 25, and about 60 MPH when I'm really going 71 MPH. I've tested it with police radars and also I've had friends pace me. Why is my speedometer further off than yours, 88? I only have 31" tires.

Wheelman, The original spare on my pathy is a 215/75/75, so maybe thats what yours came with...? According to this tire size calculator

with that kind of difference you would be 8.5% slow on the speedo, or 60mph would actually be 65mph. I'd suspect your speedo is faulty, or that of your friends and their reporting ability. Next time you see a cop doing a radar trap, politely approach him and ask if he could help you, you might be suprised...
