Hi everyone,

I have a 1989 Nissan Pathfinder 2dr SE, with the 3.0 v6 with an auto trans. The problem with this truck is when you go for a drive after ten of fifteen minuets the tach starts to jump and then sits on 0 for a while until the engine finally just shuts off and won't start for a couple good hours. Any one else had these problems?? Any help would be awsome.

 

 

NEW PARTS:

Mass Air Flow sensor

Throttle body insulator

Throttle position sensor

02 sensor

OK, I'll start the public brainstorming...

 

Right off the top, the no problems for 10 minutes, then escalating, then dead for a while makes me think thermally related. Something is OK when it is cool, but as it heats up, it starts malfunctioning and when hot, shuts down completely. Once it cools off, it works again.

 

My experience is that electronic components are most likely to exhibit this stuff. And since the tachometer is affected, I immediately leap to thinking it is a electronic component in the ignition system.

 

My first suspect: The ignition coil.

 

To test this theory: Let her run 'til she shuts down, then position a fan so it blows on the coil for 15 minutes to accelerate cool down and try to start again. If it starts up much quicker, you're on to it.

 

After coil, I think of ECU... Or some sensor, but can't imagine which would affect the tach...

Well your problem is not likely your coil if your truck is running then shutting down coil problems do not act like that usually when a coil is having problems it starts with a misfire due to lack of power out of the coil . I would suggest checking you ignition module which is located on the back of the coil mount . That tends to heat up with engine heat and cause problems . Being a technician at a Nissan dealer i have replaced a number of ignition modules but have also seen problem s with the relays located next to the fuel filter on the fender wall . Theres two green fuses at the end and one says main relay but it goes to the ignition try switching that one with the green one next to it which is the fuel pump relay and drive it and see if the problem still exist .

Yes after i had replied i read your post saying the power transistor

was most likely the cause Have you had problems with your i have replaced myn already . I got a oem Nissan one for about 110$ I think they sell them at auto zone or pepboys for like 95$. Its not a cheap parts to replace because its a solid state elactronic part. However if it is the relay those are cheap like $18 or something like that i replaced myn since i get everything at discount i dont want to take a chance and break down without replcement parts out in the desert or in a mud hole
