Transmission front pump

I have an odd question. I have a 95 hardbody auto and am in the process of replacing it with an 04 xterra transmission. Problem is the front pump on the xterra is broken. Will the pump off the 95 work? Thanks

I was tightening the pump body to the bell housing and the rotor pump was not seated correctly and it split. The only damage is to the rotor pump which I'm sure is good on the old transmission. Which leads me to my original question. Is the pump from a 95 Nissan hardbody re4r01a the same as a pump from an 04 nissan xterra re4r01a? I would think they are but I won't pull the existing trans till this weekend and am trying to figure out if I need to source a rotor pump beforehand.

Yikes, that sucks. :ohno01:

I did a little research to see if I could find a part # to cross-reference but didn't find much--it doesn't look like it's a part commonly sold on its own. The only other thing I can think of is to download the AT sections of the service manuals for the HB and the X and see if the pumps look the same, mount the same... my understanding is that the later transmissions were improved somehow, but I don't know the specifics.

Hopefully they didn't screw with the pump design.

The tricky issue is with the front pumps is that in mid to late 93 to 94 models switched to a different type of converter pump. The old style which I have in my 93 uses a two slot keyway for the torque converter to fit into the oil pump. I imagine you could swap the oil pump from your 95 onto the 04 transmission. You will have to measure the clearances and replace the races and thrust washers if needed.

Did you ever get it resolved?
