Right now I have a 2 inch suspension lift. Going to replace rear shocks with longer one and all 4 springs. I just got the parts in and need to get it up on the lift and get them changed out.

Still haven't had time to get new wheels/tires, driver window regulator showed up over the weekend but I'd left camping, hopefully get that installed tomorrow so the window is back working.

So last Thursday, after seeing a few posts here about the idea, I decided to cut 5 two inch holes into my air naked box. The theory was that more oxygen would increase power and gas mileage, plus add a slight growl to the engine. I had a backup box located in case I had issues so I cut away.

 

I drilled 3 of the two inch holes on the fender side of the box and two more holes on the bottom of the box. K&M air filter went back in place and I drove it as normal. There was a slight growl to the engine, it sounded better. There was/is a perceived increase in power. I was able to pass another vehicle uphill, which o don't think be ever done. On a particular hill to work, the cruise control, set at 70, used to always disengage 3/4s of the way up. Now it pulls me all the way up and through the hill. Again, I feel like there's more power, but no real evidence.

 

Gas mileage has increased two full miles per gallon. No out of the ordinary driving either, I primarily drive it on the freeway, 65-70 mph, to and from work. All the driving I did over the weekend was similar. I'll keep checking mileage, but for now I'm happy with the quick air box mod.

About your 33's.

 

I had t cut some plastic on the front of the front wheel openings.

Also had to cut metal at the back of the front wheel openings.

 

This may be dependent on your spacers. I got new rims with 3.75" backspacing and that may push them slightly farther out than your wheel spacers.

Nonetheless, I recommend you do it.

This is actually a pretty cool sounding idea, but couldn't it increase the possibility of water getting in? Where I live we don't have rocks, so mud and water are a common terrain and I would hate to do this if I'm just going to water-log my engine the first time I go out...

If you're hitting big puddles or doing water crossings then yes, this would be a problem. It's dry and rocky where I go and the box is still protected enough that I'm not worried about heavy rain being an issue.

Do you have pcs of where you cut? Didn't get 33's, found a deal on wheels and some used 31's for $300, to good to pass up. Mounted them today and had rubbing on full left turn reverse lock. Used a dreamer to cut some pieces, used a heat gun in other areas, but the metal towards the back of the driver wheel well still slightly rubs. It would be worse if they were new tires.

What size did you end up getting? Whatever it is, it looks good! :lmao:

31x10.5 on 15's. The tires are worn a bit, maybe a year left on them. I was thinking I'd switch to 33's when these are worn out but I'm really liking these as they are.

Well, I had 31x10.5 on stock rims without spacers and never rubbed

 

I wonder why you are? Is the back spacing different from stock?

 

I will try to remember to photograph my fender modification for you this weekend.

Backspacing on these wheels are 3.75", they push the tire about an inch past the fender flares. :aok:

Picked up a Loadwarrior from a buddy. The Yakima mounts set the basket too high so I removed the front and rear factory crossbars, built two replacement bars from aluminum, and mounted the basket. Used hose clamps for now to attach basket and crossbars. It's rock solid but I'll keep looking for something better.

On another thought, I think the current tires are already looking small...
