Slartibartfast
I did it on my grandma's Subaru a while back, wasn't hard at all. The cans have instructions on them. Make sure you get the nozzle attachment with the can, they sell separately (or they did at Malwart, anyway) and you need both. There's a pressure gauge in the nozzle attachment that tells you when to stop. Read through the instructions a few times first and make sure you hook into the correct line. vagabond
If it's completely empty it should have a vacuum drawn on the system, a good tight system will draw about 29 inches of vacuum, but you'll need a vacuum pump and a set of gauges. If it's just low you can follow the above answers, also you can look at the reciever/dryer it should have a sight glass on it if the system is low you'll see bubbles or a soapy look. While watching the sight glass you'll notice it clears up as the system is fully charged
