ahardb0dy
See here http://nissannut.com/maintenance/vg33e_upgrade/ 17th row of pictures down from the top, yes you have to remove the retainer to replace the seal Edited January 17, 2014 by ahardb0dy
Nefarious
Motor oil sits in the sump of the pan... not in the engine... just pull the plate and CAREFULLY remove and replace the seal in the plate and do NOT scratch any seal surfaces. Clean the plate of any gasket and use a suitable rtv or rubber gasket maker on the plate. Follow the FSM drawing for where to lay your bead of gasket maker, and torque to spec. Place just a tiny bit of fresh motor oil on the seals inside and outside seal surfaces before installation. take your time and you will be good to go! adamzan
There is a gasket for the seal retainer. I guess you could use rtv or whatever, but when I bought my rear main seal it came with a new gasket for the retainer...Another thing is to make sure the seal goes in straight. Mine was replaced by the PO and it leaked because it was sitting on a slight angle.
