1988 Gas Tank. Rust issues

Anyone know of a place to get one cheap or a cure to get rust out and keep it out? I've managed to get a bunch of the rust out but its impossible to get it all thanks!

Lacquer thinner and a chain.

I broke down and got a tank off of Rockauto in the end. I realized my tank ('77 CJ5) rusted all the way through when Acetone started flying all over my legs when I was shaking the tank.

i did it with vinegar and threw nuts and bolts in, but some of it wont come out is it gonna give me problems in the end?

There is a pant product called Pour15 it is by far best way to stop rust and inhibit rust later down the road I actually plan on doing the whole underside of my Patsy.

Also if you're trying to get rusty bolts out PB blaster is magic.

Yeah itll give you problems, but really only slowly clogging fuel filters and the strainer.

is it safe to put that pour15 stuff inside the gas tank?

Rockauto.com has new tanks pretty cheap. I recently bought one, no issues at all.

Don't now how it would react to to gas I don't think I would put it in a gas tank though.

But it's grate anything else.

I just bought a new tank because mine's leaking. Ended up going with one from eBay, since Rockauto wanted about $100 for shipping alone.

 

Can't say how good it is since it hasn't shown up yet.

Mine was really bad. I ended up pulling the tank to clean it. I Filled it with water, drained and then used a shopvac to remove all the loose rust. I then had to take a 2X4 and beat the side of the tank to knock the rest of the rust off the walls and re-vacume. It took quite some time.

Caswell makes a gas tank sealer that works well. It will fill smaller holes and coats the inside of the tank with a layer of epoxy. Awesome stuff, about 40 bucks online will do a 20 gallon tank...Blue Lightning also makes a similar product that I use on Poly tanks, Caswell does not bond to cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE).
