The lights are turned off.

 

The hand brake is engaged.

 

Your foot presses the brake pedal.

ah Ha! Investigation over. I've not know a car do this before. There's enough wiring updates and mystery switches by prev owners to get me feeling cautious.

 

Unless... your ride is haunted too.

Mine lights up the brake lights without the key as well. So long as the lights aren't illuminating the Slenderman you're good to go.

Shouldn't it always light up the brake lights regardless of if the key is in or not?

Every car I've owned lights up when the brake pedal is pressed regardless if the key is in the ignition or not. Maybe a safety feature?

Yea, most cars I've driven are like that, now Ive been in a few that DONT work unless the key i son as well (06-07ish style malabus right off the top of my head. And multipule of them, not just a 1 time thing)

All old vehicles you would think would do this - most are simple switch/relay arrangements. on modern cars with BCM's...it can be programmed one way or the other I guess. BCM's are always active...
