Headers

my vg is deafening at 5,000 rpm.. it just gets deep-loud until 3k, then it gets high pitched loud and from there it just gets higher pitched and louder.

And you posted this why? You post everywhere and rarely say anything useful to the conversation. I don't wanna be a jerk but maybe you should spend some time learning the automotive basics before asking questions about elementary stuff in the middle of threads where everyone else clearly understands the subject at hand. Leave the answering of questions to the people that know the answers. :fish:

5k rpm is nothing for a VG30, a stock one with 200k miles will go 7k rpm all day long. They sound pretty freakin' mean up there too. :aok: Headers by themselves will probably gain a few HP. Headers with free flowing exhaust using a good muffler and either a high flow cat or none at all will probably gain you 10hp. Ceramic coat those headers inside and out and you should get 5-7hp more (assuming you aren't drawing intake air from under the hood, you'll gain much more with coated headers if you are). So replacing everything after the heads might net 15 *real* horsepower. If it were a Honduh there would be ads with dyno graphs claiming a 35hp gain.

A lot of time over 5000rpm in a pathy? Whaaaa

Where I live I spend a lot of time climbing steep hills at moderate speeds and the gearing on these trucks is very tall so it will go to high rpm for power and speed.

Gotcha...yea I guess most of the wheeling I do I want torque at the low end and lots of skinny pedal=lots of broken parts unless I'm in the mud the the rpms r up...I honestly didn't see a lot of difference between no headers and headers but then again I didn't do any intake or exhaust work...straight headers leaves u with no torque available

150 hp with the correct stickers.

Really, maybe h useable hp and ditto torq.

I thought the VG30E already had 153 hp and 180 torque stock, and adding headers and a cat back exhaust it would increase those numbers by a certain percentage

You will get up to maybe 160hp.

The torque effect comes from the design of the primary tubes. The whole point of a performance exhaust is so that the engine can breathe better at high rpm so that it can put out more horsepower when it revs above what it was meant to be driven at. You can build headers for low end torque as well but they will perform identical to the stock exhaust manifold.

Ok, that makes sense thank you, (sorry still learning)

Yeah, I was being a smart ass, saying you would gain 150hp with the correct stickers. Looking back the whole H instead of five surprized me since I didnt know what I said.

Shorty headers= high rpm power

Long tube = low end tourqe

and custom tuned headers = best of both worlds.

Thats all there is too know about headers in a very condensed lesson.

The difference between short and long tube headers is very moot point. The only reason why long tubes are considered more effective is because the exhaust pulses are less likely to interfere with each other at the collector which will slightly improve scavenging. The length really does not matter that much on a VG engine because of its 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order. Both short and long tubes are effective in increasing mid range torque and high rpm horsepower. If you want more low end and less attention from the cops, stick with the stock exhaust.

As a full time pig working for the pork chop express....

As long as your stuff is not overly obnoxious then you are good to go in my AO...

Some other places seem to have the need to stop every little ricer...and rightly so...

Point is...

If it is done right it wont be an issue...

I hope so! I know I did get pulled over at least twice for my setup but was never fined, they just looked at it and at my documentation. My setup is done right but the big fat shiny pipe coming out of the back can be an attention getter.

As for the headers, I forgot to include that if you run a full exhaust with almost any kind of muffler and catalytic converter, the header length or if they are equal or not won't matter at all.
