Cam Shaft Seals

Hi I just pulled the timing belt cover off the engine I am putting in my 91. The RH cam shaft seal is leaking. I found the part number in an old post and will order two in.

Since both pulleys will need to come off I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to make sure the pulleys are positioned correctly when reinstalled.

Will putting the engine at TDC, installing the pulleys and counting the teeth on the belt between the indicator marks do the trick?

Any insight is appreciated.

it's a good thing you found a leaky cam seal because the leaky seals are the number one reason why those timing belts go bad

Theoretically all of the seals should be outside the timing belt cover (the cam seals are behind the rear cover plate for instance), but still, the more fluids that are flying around, the more chance they get inside...

The FSM has a page where it shows you how to diagnose the problem based on timing belt damage.

Actually the number one reason of tbelt failure other than just not changing it is getting coolant on it. Every mechanic I have ever talked to has told me the same thing. Do not get coolant (or anything really ) on the belt.

Agreed, I am pretty sure any fluid back there is bad, either for the timing belt or something else.

FYI the seals were 12 bucks each should be in a few days.
