How to get more trans fluid into my 5spd tranny for dummies?

Recommended Posts

I am still working out a few minor details on my new to me 1988 Pathfinder. Mine has a 5 speed and I have learned on this site and the factory had a TSB on transmission fluid level mark being off by 1.5 liters. I read you can A) tilt the car to add more?

or

B) add the extra fluid thru the shifter?

Does anyone now of a link with step by step for either option? Preferably with photos!

Thanks in advance

Andrew

tilt option= simply either parking in a way the fill plug side is higher (on a drive on ramp or a good curb possibly) or just jacking the side up and putting it on stands before putting you head under it.

I add through the shifter. Its is much easier than using all the hoses and you can add as much as you want. This is How I do it.

Remove shifter.

Remove side plug.

Fill until fluid comes out side plug

Close side plug

Add as required

Re-install shifter

Hope this helps

P.S Snap ring pliers are helpful but not necessary for removing the shifter

  • 3 weeks later...

The most I could get in using the tilt method was 5 quarts. I was already pretty sketched out by it, but maybe if I allowed myself to be even more sketched I could get the full amount in. I would go the shifter route in the future.
