shooter
When I recently changed my t-belt I also changed the alternator and p.s. belts. The alternator belt has a little squeak to it at idle. Not a squeal from slipping, just a little slow speed squeak. When I spray a little belt dressing on it it will stop for a while then come back. Is there a good belt dressing or any other trick to stop this squeak? Thanks. I saw on youtube to hold a candle against the underside of it to stop a squeak by getting wax on it. Didn't work. nunya
Re-adjust it and make sure the alt. is mounted tight. The new belt proably stretched
GrimGreg
Sure it is the belt and not the bearing in the alt?
Kingman
Belt dressing, waxing, water, and taking a wire brush to the side of the belt while the engine is running are only temporary fixes. You'll probably need a new belt, or you'll need to clean off the pulley real well. It could be glazed over and can't grab the belt as well as it should. sherwood
Could be the bearing set. I took mine off and greased it well. It's just a band-aid but it's held up in for almost a year.
shooter
I googled it and one solution suggested by a mechanic (he says) was to put a dollop of grease on each side of the belt. 150 miles later it is still quiet.
Precise1
LOL, greasing a friction drive surface!! I second the glazed pulleys. If everything else is proper, all a belt needs is proper tensioning.
