are all 96-04 compatable?

FSM? Do you mean Field Service Manual?

I would think you would need one to suit your same year and country. I know the US ones aren't 100% for the Australian market.

I think the answer here is no. The 96 thru 2000 use the 3.3L drivetrain vs the 01-04 VQ3.5L. There are likely some other differences but I am not sure what they are. There was a body style change in 99.5 for one thing....

Not an r50 person but gonna have to say thats a negative. Not all wd21s have the same setup (tbi/mpfi setups as an example) I would think r50s had some changes throughout their life as well.

The variations between the early model ('96-'99) and late model ('00-'04) are numerous despite being subtle to most. My Haynes manual, for example, covers the '96-'01 R50 Pathfinder models. :scratchhead:

Depending on what year R50 it is, there are small differences one wouldn't see without looking at the vehicle quite meticulously. For example, the '99 R50 uses a different charcoal EVAP system than the earlier models, and it is apparently more problematic despite being newer. From '00 on, the rear shock mounts were changed from what was used on the '96-'99 models. Another is the engine variation between the '96-'00 models (VG33E) and the '01-'04 models (VQ35DE).

I guess it isn't as clear cut as to say one model year vs. another is compatible or incompatible; there are several factors to consider, making for more grey areas than anything.

All 90-95 WD21 are reliable as long as they are properly maintained and not beat on to badly, the ones before that were weak and girlie...

The old style R50 have proven themselves as far as reliablilty, and the newer ones with the 3.5l seem to be doing about the same but need a few more years of history.

I know nothing about the new ones 2005+ models, other than I doubt I would buy one.

As for all the compatibilities, the 3.0l and 3.3l share the same trannys, but other than that, consider each model number to be its own group.

Just start buying them up. Several good buys over the next few years could keep you in pathfinders for life...

Hey B

I love my 2004 R50! Although I have never driven or seen one driven, I don't know much about the earlier ones. Apart from only getting 31s under mine and only 2" of lift, with the front Lokka, it goes where I want it to go. This is much further than a lot of people expect it to go too. Looking rather stock except for the tyres, people expect it wont go far and be better suited on the bitumen. I lead a lot of trips down my way and usually with better equipped Patrols and Land Cruisers and have no problems keeping up with them.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear with my statements, please see the corrections. My brain goes faster than my typing sometimes, and of course I know what I mean, I think... :D

The newest style, post 2004, I don't think I would buy.

Actually I think the VQ powered R50s are more desirable than the VG ones (same basic body, more power) as long as the motor proves it's self to be a reliable 250k+ mile unit.

While I have 2 95s, I also just purchased a 99 so I cant hate them too much... ;)
