Confucius say: trucker with cardboard windshield asking for trouble

By David Menzies

They say necessity is the mother of invention. Case in point: Chinese truck driver Mr. Li, who found himself with a rig sporting a shattered windshield. What’s a trucker to do when he’s got no windscreen but the cargo absolutely positively has to get there?

Li’s novel solution: he used a sheet of cardboard in place of a pane of glass.

Astute readers have likely already noted that cardboard isn’t even remotely transparent. And Li is surely lacking the eyesight acumen of Clark Kent.

Nevertheless, the diligent trucker was able to pilot his rig some 650 km in freezing conditions before finally being pulled over by authorities, according to the China News Network.

Li was able to navigate the sometimes treacherous roads by looking through small holes that he adroitly drilled into the cardboard. The peepholes worked brilliantly until Li came across an excessive amount of traffic. This scenario forced Li to crane his head out the side window – doggie-style – in order to properly maneuver the rig.

Eventually, the Trucker of the Year candidate was ordered by traffic officers to pull over after Li was observed zipping along the Jinggang’ao Highway in Henan province.

“The weather was extremely cold, but we saw a lorry with a cardboard windscreen,” said a police spokesman. “And the driver had his head out of the side window all the time.”

If anything, driving a big rig in such a fashion wasn’t a fun-filled experience for Li. When he emerged from the cab, Li’s face was sporting a purple hue thanks to the frigid wind shear.

Li told the incredulous police officers he had been in an accident in Hubei province several days earlier but didn’t have time to properly repair his windshield due to his tight delivery schedule.

Li also noted he would drive with his head out the cab until his neck “got too sore and numb.” At that point, he would revert back to piloting the truck by squinting out the strategically-placed peepholes.

Police promptly escorted the truck to a nearby service station and ordered Li to repair his truck properly before hitting the road.

Apparently, driving a truck with a cardboard windscreen is indeed a safety hazard – even in China.

And I thought America had all the dumb drivers... I guess they're all over the place. I think along with a driving test, your common sense and IQ should be tested before being allowed on the road... just a thought.

Sorry for the rant, but stupid people driving irritates me a little.

Having spent some time in China and seen what and how they drive....I'm not surprised one bit. I doubt that meth was involved at all. It's very common Chinese attitude.

The lines on the roads are more of suggestion then a real requirement. The funny thing is that I have heard that India is even worse then China

The Caribbean has the worst driving. Ever. 60 in a 25 at least, almost ZERO traffic laws, people stop in the middle of the road to make a U-turn into oncoming traffic to get somewhere, people jetting across lanes and it's just one hell of a mess.
