Precise1
What do you plan to use the rack for most of the time and does your keyboard have a <shift> or <.> button? Yakima and Thule are two of th choices I know of off hand but I recall someone using an 'off brand' that worked well for them. B

Precise1
The Yakima or Thule mounts are by the doors (I don't own one so I can't be more specific) and have a considerably higher payload than the factory roof rack that just lays on the sheet metal. You probably want to copy that mounting system, not to mention it should be easily removable then. I understand you are having it fabbed, I just figured you could use the aftermarket types as a design reference. B

pulxar
perfect thanks alot guys I recently purchased a Defender rack for my '94 from Automotive Customizers (www.4x4parts.com). Shipping was a bit high, but the rack is very nice and bolted directly to the factory mounts. I have used it to haul lumber for building a fence and ladders for work. I'd at least take a look at it, the part I got is RHOUPF90WRACKWELD. There is also a version of this rack that is designed for trucks without factory racks. Jeenyus
I used sportrack, basicaly a less expensive brand to thule and yakima, cheaper and simpler, but also sturdier.

If they are making just the load bars, then you can mount them with bolts through the roof. If they are just making you a basket, then get the Thule or Yakima "clamp on" towers with cross bars to mount the basket to. I have the Thule, and have carried a 32' ladder with no trouble on them. canadian4wheeler
If you have no stock roof rack as I do on my 95. I purchased a thule gutter mount system off of craigslist for 100 bucks. And I put a rocketbox on it and bike rack and it's really strong. Cause when I go on road trips I swap it all out and put a basket on it and have no problems. And it doesn't affect my sunroof at all. Since you can slide the rack back and forth to however you prefer.
