gauge cluster issues

i have me a 85 pathy with an auto tranny well my cluster has a tach in it but it only works sometimes then other times it lays flat at zero and even more often than that it bounces everywhere whats the cause how can i fix this and im a noob to the site jus not to nissans!!!

This I really doubt... ;)

 

If it is a 95, you have the notorious electronic cluster, they are prone to failure. The first thing to do is remove the cluster and check the connections and tighten the brass screws in the back of the flex circut board (they are the ground points). See if it works then, sometimes it fixes the issue.

Tachometer failures are not a rare case on previous (87-93) years also. The same defect cause: first - "little brass screws", second - failure of small electronic board inside the gauge (bad soldering or chip faults).

Yeah as good as the updated dashboard clusters look, I don't like them because they are generally defective. I have seen one where the tach needle sat all the way at the end instead of 0 and wouldn't move. :lol:
