Starter will not turn over, when I turn the key all I hear is one little click up in the engine compartment which I think is my fuel pump but I could be wrong. Starter does nothing, tried banging on starter but does no good. I've checked the battery and all wires I can get to. No blown fuses, checked the relays by swapping them around with like ones (same part #'s), have 12.26v at battery and if I'm checking it right have that to the starter. The fusible links are good. ECU is not putting out any codes. Tried starting in neutral and same thing. Please any suggestions as I'm tired of banging my head against the wall. nige Posted August 30, 2009 Share Posted August 30, 2009 (edited) the click you hear is most likely the starter relay. The fuel pump makes a short whirring noise with the key in on position. try tapping the starter housing with a hammer or something. The armature might be stuck. the battery should turn it over with 12.2 volts. Try boosting it with another car too. The starter might be on it's way out. Needalife Posted September 3, 2009 Author Share Posted September 3, 2009 Ok I've pulled the starter and replaced it even though it tested good. Still dead All connections are tight, tested relays and fuses again, tested new starter, tested battery. Any other suggestions? I can turn on the lights, try to start it and they do not dim at all. So that says to me that the starter is not getting power but I've tested all the wires and they are good. I doubt it but could it be the ECU? I am mechanically inclined not electrically on cars. k9sar Posted September 3, 2009 Share Posted September 3, 2009 (edited) Check that you have 12V on the big wire at the starter Check that you get 12V on the trigger wire that runs to the solenoid (plug on the starter) when the key is turned to start. Check that, if you bypass the trigger wire (starter relay, inhibitor and ignition switch) by running a direct hot line from the battery to the lug on the starter solenoid (on the starter), it jumps to life and cranks. You may want to disconnect your ignition coil first so it doesn't really start. post the results of these diagnostics and we'll point you toweard the problem. If your starter tested good, the problem is most likely in the ignition circuit which consists of the ignition switch, inhibitor, starter relay and all the wires that run in between. I am assuming that you had your starter tested at a parts store, right? When you tested your battery, did you test it on the posts or on the clamps? Did you test the voltage drop when the key is turned? If you fusable link is bad or you have a weak ground, the lights will be fine but you wouldn't have enough power to runt he starter. If your relay is clicking (once, and not rapidly), I would focus on the wire that runs to your starter solenoid damn.. I'm tired of typing this step by step starter troubleshooting information. maybe someone should search and find the threads that have all this information and pin them. There is a fix to add one, that I have posted a link to a couple times now. In fact, I just fixed my starter problems with it even though mine's a 5-speed. Mine would actually start on the 10th or 20th try, but sounds like it might be the same problem I had. Not enough juice to the starter solenoid.
