Surface Rust Removal

Quick Question for getting surface rust off....

 

Angle Grinder with sanding disc thing

 

OR

 

Sandpaper

 

 

 

 

I have a few spots that need to be taken care of on both my vehicles, and im torn on either sandpaper or grinder, i would be worried about getting too far down with the grinder but anyways...

I'd just use sand paper or a scotch pad. I would be far too worried about messing up and gouging right through the good paint. By hand might take a little longer, but it's much safer.

i guess it depends on the definition of surface rust...surface rust i'm used to is a matter of getting some 2000 grit paper and knocking the rust off and maybe touching up the clear coat...

 

if its startint to bubble sandpaper and/or a scotch brite but an angle grinder/buffer will eat through the metal pretty quick and will make it difficult to blend in without some bondo

...this works good too, for squarely replacing surfaces... up here, rust has long teeth...

a wire wheel attachment for your drill or angle grinder makes short work of the loose stuff. Be careful with the sanding discs, some of them can take off quite a bit of material very quickly. If you can borrow or rent a sandblaster, they work the best. I used one to clean up behind my fender flare and the repair lasted for 4 years before the rust started to peek through the paint again.
