nissandoms47
lol wow... anyways back to shocks, i actually wanna go with the king bypass shocks when i get my axle in the front, 4 link the rear and 3 link the front(with track bar) radius arms are cool but for some reason im not a big fan on just having 2 bolts hold my front axle in.. my friends dad has the fox shocks on his 04 dodge and for some reason his aluminum shock bodies are rusting.. so weird.. my 7100s are still in great shape. ive got so many damn tickets right now my license might get suspended for 2 months.. if that happens the r50 will get sasd. Its already all drawn out, i just cant afford the downtime unless im forced to. (no license) I just got back from st george on a wheeling trip and all i can say is i more travel in the front and lower tcase gears lol.

tekazgtr1984
will i need to modify the 7100s and/or my mounts to install them? Shouldn't they just mount eye-to-eye?
nissandoms47
the top mount isnt an issue, its the axle side that is a welded stud to the axle with a nut that secures it, you'll have to that completely off, get a nut and bolt and double shear the lower shock mount... Fukinitupagain
yes, but apparently OEM uses 14mm bolts and the shock ends use 1/2in Heim joints. so if the nuts aren't welded to the brackets, i might try using 1/2in nuts/bolts regardless; or enlarge the holes in the shock ends to 14mm. i'm not so sure how i'd do the latter without potentially screwing things up. i guess i'll know soon enough. mine should ship out tomorrow. This doen't hold true for 96-99 R50's, does it?... I've never noticed it if it does.
tekazgtr1984
it's probably not, because my info was wrong. the stud is actually 5/8in diameter (or whatever the metric equivalent), but the threaded section is 14mm. Isn't that exactly the same? A spark plug is 5/8 or 14mm in metric... Did I miss something?
Kingman
9/16 is a 14mm

nissandoms47
what? i use 9/16s sockets and wrenches in place of 14mms... the shocks come with these little inserts that go into the heim joints at the end of the shocks that allow the use of a 14 mm bolt, when did these shocks on my xterra, i used those inserts on the bottom with the stock bolt and it was a perfect fit. should work on the top mount of the r50. Double shear the new bottom for added strength though.
tekazgtr1984
Bah, the metric/imperial conversion bullsh*t just loses me. So to make the 7100's work, the axle mounts need to be modified?
tekazgtr1984
That's really bunk news to read... I was hoping just to swap in the 7100's and that'd be it. ...That's what I get for being a lazy SOB.

I was hoping just to swap in the 7100's and that'd be it. ...That's what I get for being a lazy SOB. actually, the earlier R50s do use a double shear lower shock mount. i'm not sure of the bolt size, but it is definitely not the same setup as mine; it is the more traditional mount, similar to the uppers. i just got back from the junkyard and had a look at a few early R50 Pathy/QX4 trucks. the bilstein 7100s should bolt up with minimal fuss. you'd only have to replace the 14mm bolt with a 1/2in bolt. Yeah, that's something I have trouble understanding, too. It's the fail when small, somewhat irrelevant changes like that are made because it probably didn't solve anything. nissandoms47
My second set of front shocks didnt really affect it, those shocks just allow me to handle pot holes and wash board roads a lot easier, it still sways just as much, they're a second set of shocks.. not springs. laxman0324
I agree with Alex...when I lifted mine I had to remove the front sway bar to replace the links, and I just left it off because with the AC coils it didn't have much body roll...Then when I swapped back the stock springs to sell it, it had horrendous body roll, it was quite scary like that... laxman0324
When I installed my Moog front stabilizer links I didn't have to remove the front sway bar...? I didn't have the money to spend on new sway bar links at the time, and after driving it and coming to the conclusion the ride wasn't bad w/o the front sway bar I decided to not put it back on, however with stock springs it needed to go back on...
