A/C Compressor

Hey guys how would I know if my A/C compressor is going bad?

My A/C belt tore 3 weeks ago and the mechanic told me that it could be my compressor clutch locking up on me.

I thought that if an A/C clutch went out it just went out and it wouldn't work anymore.

Today 3 weeks later it tore again as well as the alternator and power steering belt.

1993 Pathfinder V6, manual, 4x4.

Check the A/c tensioner Pulley. It will be the pulley on top in the front of the engine. That bearing has been known to seize up and cause just what you are describing. This is more likely the case.

The one time I heard of this happening, it turned out that the crank pulley (the big one all the belts are attached to) had worn or somehow got messed and it was kinda wobbling, which in turn would tear the belts, but not before they would squeal like old hell.

I *think* (not sure on the wd21's, as this happened on an r50) there is a rubber bushing inside the harmonic balancer i think its called, well anyways i think that can deteriorate over time.

Maybe there are some nics in the pulleys from people using screwdrivers to pry on belts.....

Someone correct me if im wrong, but my shop teacher told me a long time ago, that you can use a strait edge to see if all the pulleys line up, and if they don't, start there.

Edit: msavides i didn't see your post but you could be right, as that happened on my 95, makes a lot of noise before it seizes though. :ohno01:

I think both of the opinions stated up above are correct. The Compressor clutch usually just locks up i think or atleast that is what I have always seen. The fact that all 3 belts tore this time leads me to think unless the shrapnel from the ac belt tore the other belts that it is in fact either the crank pulley or the idler pulley. I would get the belts and put them on then watch the engine as it's running and see if either of the pulleys are wobbling and go from there.
