Hello All! Tb Question...

What's up everybody, I just moved back to the Norhtwest from Indiana and I FINALLY have a reason to mod my truck! So I have two different questions:

1) How do I clean my throttle body? I noticed that if I disconnect the air intake anywhere past the MAF to access the throttle body, the engine won't start. How can I get this job done?

2) I'd like to get Warn hubs, but I've read in a couple different discussions that it affects some kind of pump connected to the front axle. Is this true?

Btw, I just used my stock intake and a cone air filter with a MAF adapter to make a MUCH higher flowing shorty intake! It's works GREAT too, there's definitely a noticeable difference in midrange.

Who told you there was a pump on the front axle? Nope, sorry. No such thing. Many R50 owners have Warn hubs installed with no problems.

Go check out the How-To section in the Garage for how to clean your TB...

I don't remember which post I saw it in, but I found it when I searched for warn hubs. I'll definitely check out the garage how-to, I somehow must have missed it.lol

Hi, I just looked at your profile, which says your rig is a stock QX4 with 16" wheels, but the year is shown as "1987". Do you mean 1997?

Anyway, the "pump" you're referring to is actually an oil pump in the AWD transfer case that is, if I understand correctly, powered by the rotation of the front driveshaft. Disconnecting the front drivetrain from the wheels results in the pump not rotating, which (I suppose) is a bad thing! However, some people have been successful in installing manual hubs on AWD R50's.

The question I would put forth is: Why do you want manual hubs? Are you just hopping on the bandwagon, or do you have some REAL justification for wanting them?

As for cleaning the TB, it must be done with the engine off. Remove the rubber intake elbow on the TB, and spray TB cleaner into the butterfly valve as you manually open/close it. (Place a rag under the TB opening to catch any TB cleaner that will certainly drip out.)

Reassemble the intake ducting, then restart the engine to help burn away the TB cleaner in the manifold.

For further cleaning, if your rig is a '97, you should be able to use the EVAP port just behind the butterfly valve to ingest SeaFoam into the intake to clean it. Search the forum or the 'net for "SeaFoam" for more info.

The part circled below is the EVAP hose which you can disconnect (from the EVAP purge volume control valve) to ingest SeaFoam (instead of disconnecting the brake booster hose):

Good info Dean.

As far as the warn hubs - if you have 4x4 on a knob and a huge cupholder next to the shifter then you can't get them.

If your 4x4 is on a big shifter stick and you dont have the huge cupholder, then you can get the warn hubs

i'm 99% sure that the 97 QX4 has the big manual stick for 4x4 and no huge cupholder - you should be fine with the hubs.

Thanks for the great info so far! I have a 1998 QX4, not sure why my profile says that...I'll take care of it. About the 4wd though, I do have the on-the-fly knob and 2 cupholders by the shifter. The only thing on the center console is the transfer case lever.

I wanted to get the hubs because I can feel the drag that the front axles are introducing. It'd be nice to cut back some of that and increase my gas mileage a couple mpg's. If that pump is meant to shift the truck into 4wd, would it really be that bad since I won't be using the 4wd knob anyways? The only time I'd even be using it was when the hubs are engaged already.

Funny you mention the seafoam too, I've been using that on the last 4 cars I've owned. It's been around for ages, just not many people know about it. I used that same hose you described too! I'll try the TB method as well, I just figured it would better to have the engine running so nothing pools up and possibly hydrolock the motor.

By the way, what should I look out for when cleaning the TB Nissan3? I think I do have the drive by wire system. The throttle body has a sealed cap over the throttle.

Are you sure you have the drive by wire? Are there two cables going to the TB connecting to a butterfly valve? what does this seal cap look like? could you post a pic

If you have a '98 QX4, I doubt have a drive-by-wire throttle. Does your TB look like the one shown in the upper left corner of this photo?

yep, that's the same TB that I have XPLORx4. So is that TB a drive-by wire? I'm not quite sure if I'm sure how else to tell, or the difference.

Then no you don't have the drive by wire system. Then only reason you have to be careful with those TB is because the sensors in them are sensitive and you could throw off your idle, thats what ended up happening to me. But you should be good.
