New Pathy

Hey, just purchased an 87 Pathy, Se, 5sp, 4X4 as a off-road, snow and ice, and ocassional use vehicle. Fairly rough inside, which is no big deal, and currently have a mechanic guy I know checking it out. Definitely need some new tires, lift kit, etc. Any recommendations on lift kit (probably just 2"" or so), tires etc? This was a former Police vehicle in some small town in OK, can still see the faded "police" logos- Mechanically fairly good, friend picked it up at an auto action for $500-

Thanks!

Check the rear frame for rust, tap it with a hammer or screwdriver to make sure there aren't any rot holes. Also check the front suspension and steering for slop.

Pick your poison on lift kits, all UCA lifts are more-or-less the same concept-wise. Most of the difference is in the price and included parts. You can get Calmini, Superlift, Rough Country, Old Man Emu and AC. I don't recommend the AC kit mostly due to poor engineering and fitment issues. Calmini is the most expensive and beefy, Superlift/RC are almost identical parts-wise and durability-wise, and you don't have to buy a whole kit all at once if you don't want to, you can buy one part at a time...ie, UCA's first, then shocks, then rear springs, steering upgrades. Stock torsion bars can be reindexed for more lift, so there's no real need to buy new t-bars unless the old ones are sagging to the floor and you can't get them cranked up. You can also get a 2" or 3" Trailmaster or Performance Accessories body lift if you don't care to mess with suspension mods.

The steering system is going to need some upgrades before it'll take much abuse off-road.
