Soccerstudd5 Posted September 11, 2007 Share Posted September 11, 2007 (edited) So I bought some new speakers for my 94 pathy, and it's a good thing I did, cause they were shot! But I got the 5x7's and stared putting them in, only to find out the don't quite fit. The problem is, the lip around the speaker that you screw through to hold the speaker in is narrower on the new speakers, meaning the cone and supports are wider. The supports won't allow the speaker to go all the way, even though the holes on the new and old speakers do line up. I've thought about either cutting the four places the supports hit my sheet metal with tin snips, and I've thought about grinding away a bit at the hole, making the diameter bigger, as long as I leave the screw holes and enough around it to support the speaker. Has anyone else come across this problem or have any other, maybe simpler suggestions for me? Or does this sound like a good idea and it should work? I removed the metal grille and cut out the plastic leaving just the oval, which fits a 5x7 perfect. Than I used long sheet metal screws and screwed threw the plastic into the roof. Carefull not to use to long a screw you may go threw your roof. I will try and get a pic later. Mr. Pickles Posted September 14, 2007 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Tin snips. Works every time. Don't forget a hammer. I've had to *motivate* some openings in various rigs, no biggie. Just be careful and work slow and smart. I've got Infinity 5x7's up front, 6x9's in back, no real mods required behind the stock speaker grills, just a little snipping of the plastic and such. If you're using stock grills, check how much clearance you have between the new speaker and grill. You might be able to make a thin spacer between the speaker and metal, maybe 1/8th-1/4" thick behind the speaker to pull it out of the hole and clear the metal. Try some cheap paneling/wainscotting, that stuff about half way between cardboard and plywood, you can pick up a sheet pretty cheap at Home Depot, etc. Or just cut the metal. Your call.
