FUELER
Questions from a newbie, so excuse me if they are dumb: I just bought a 92 Pathfinder. It leaks oil like crazy. Big puddle under the truck after it runs. I would like to fix this. The previous owner said it was the Rear Main Seal. It appears to be this based on my observations underneath. I am sure the engine or tranny or both needs to come out to do this. While it is out I plan to do a total re-seal, i.e. oil pan, valve covers, etc, maybe even timing belt. How difficult is this to do? I have some experience in removing engines from old Subaru's. It seems like there is less room to work on the Pathfinder. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. 88pathoffroad
Do the valve covers first. Check your oil filter too, it could have been double-gasketed and the oil is dribbling down the block to the rear. The RMS is usually not a source of major leakage as far as I've seen. 'Course there's always the exception...

Casey.T
Check the oil sending unit for leaks as well....
unccpathfinder
dont pull the engine to do the RMS...just the...t bars, tranny x member, drive shafts, starter, exhaust from manifolds to the end of the collector... but do check everything else as well...also it could be the oil pan gasket...if thats the case go ahead and drop out the front axle and replace the gasket while the engine is still in the truck... clantieri
I am going to pull the engine anyway, that way I can tackle everything at once. My plans are to replace the following while it's out: Front and rear crank seals Camshaft seals timing belt oil pan gasket valve cover gaskets exhaust manifolds and gaskets intake gasket oil pan plug gasket spark plugs disty cap rotor egr gaskets (cleaned EGR, seems ok) air filter oil filter PCV valve Any other suggestions?
