Today i was cleaning a house for a lady that had a 97 R50 and we got to talking about random things about our rides. She made a statement that i had never heard before and i was thinking that she was full of it and so was her mechanic (at the dealership). She said that when your filling the R50s up with gas you need to stop at the click and do not round it up to the next dollar. She stated that the reason for this was that the over flow mechinsm on these models was not designed very well and that some of the gas vapors can get in to the cylinders and cause carbon build up and can eventually cause damage. When i heard this i was thinking that she was full of it but then she said that it also happened to one of her friends as well. 5523Pathfinder Posted June 17, 2007 Share Posted June 17, 2007 (edited) I dont know about vapors getting sucked back into the cylinders, but what can happen can cause damage. The On Board Refueling Valve, has been known to let fuel into the vapor lines. This can get into the charcoal canister and the charcoal pellets can get sucked back up the lines and clog them. They could also get sucked all the way into the intake just passed the purge valve. I have seen this personally, and its expensive. Most automakers dont want you to top off the tank to being with. When the pump "clicks", you should stop. Those pellets can get stuck in components and it requires a lot of work to clean and replace all the parts. Not sure why but probably something to do with the vapour recovery system. So although her reason may be a bit suspect, the practice is sound. Folks, I agree...my Pathy's lines were full of carbon granules there; suspect the previous owners must have done the top off things. Again WITTIHS: Why isn't this taught in High School? If the automakers would spend one percent of one percent of the money pushing useful info as they did churning out feel-good fluff in their ads, we'd be better off! Jarsiff Posted June 17, 2007 Share Posted June 17, 2007 (edited) Ive heard this before with different cars people just not believing in topping off but i have never seen an issue with my truck or my cars doing this. in fact that big trip i just took i had i topped off every time, done it before and i just did it yesterday, no light no issues. is this something that builds over time or what?
