Trouble Starting Engine...

OK. So I've been noticing more and more lately, my engine has trouble turning over. I figured it was the battery, since my battery was incredibly old, so I replaced it with an Optima Yellow. So today I'm at pepboys when I'm "visiting clients" for work. I buy a nice big tranny cooler. I go to the parking lot... Turn the key.

Engine cranks, doesnt turn over.

Try again. Fails as if my battery were nearly drained.

One last try. Turn the key all the way. Nothing. Absolute silence. Engine doesnt even try to turn over.

I think "oh @!*%, i've got a big problem here"... being that I was supposed to be working, not playing at pepboys.

I flip open the hood, starting to notice that feeling of impending doom. Look around. Nothing is loose, out of place, missing, or out of the ordinary. I decide to give it another go... starts perfect.

What in gods name could it be? My timing belt is being done tomorrow, so any ideas I'll write down so that my mechanic can take a look.

Dirty battery terminals? Loose, corroded, or cracked battery cable(s)? Are you sure you tightened them down properly?

The old *and* new battery had the same problem, and the terminals on the new one are nice and clean, and I cleaned the corosion off the cables with a wire brush before connecting the optima..

Anyone got a recommendation for a new starter?

before dumping money intoa new starter, make sure you have the voltage getting to it. could be the ignition switch, a relay, or even a bad connection in a wiring harness.

Your starter should have a 12V hot (big-ass wire) and you should be able to measure 12V on your solenoid connector when you turn the key to start.

read this. It seems to be more and more common.
