Steering Disc

Has anybody replaced the rubber disc that separates the two halves of the steering shaft. I had a friend who had an old nissan 280Z and he bought a bushing set for the entire vehicle that came with this disc, but it was made out of a harder material. Has any one replaced this on a pathy. I'm assuming it tightens up the steering, anyone care to comment?

I haven't done that, nor have I heard of anyone doing it. My guess is that it is ignored unless it fails. I can't see how much difference it would make in a 4x4 unless it fell out... *shrug*

This is called a Rag joint. extreme off roaders, generally replace these with a solid joint, typically a small ujoint.

 

This actually connects the two parts of the steering shaft, in order to help reduce front end vibrations to be transmitted to the driver. Aslo, to allow a flex point in the shaft cheaply

 

These do fail, hosever its extremly rare. It should only be 2 bolts to change it,if you have it why not?

Does the current rag joint have play in it? I'd suspect steering parts lower down first for looseness.
