xdvious
I have 97 Pathy done 190000km I love it,, hopefully dont have to replace it nothing quite compares on themarket these days Problem is there is a large clonking sound when we take off,, also there is this banging just before you come to a complete stop.. mechanic have looked at it,, they thought it was backlash in diff as sound comes from diff or uni joints but apon inspection both these items are fine. they think sound is travelling along shaft,, and bangng on the diff and unis etc also some rattling when just rolling from unis both mechanics including a nissan specialist believe its the transfer case. It does not do this when 4wd is activated just after you take off half a second you feel/hear a bang,, sometimes 1 second later it isnt during gear changes.. can leave it in first gear and still does it.. and when you break relatively hard stop as the car comes to a complete stop and bounces on the suspension it clonks.. sometimes if it doesnt do it and yo have been stopped for 3 seconds then it clonks.. we thought was auto,, but they pulled it out and , apart from the modifications removing the lock up convertor as it vibrated as it engaged on the freeway.. there werent any other problems,, put new filters fluids etc. still does clonking noise. very strange but is getting louder and quite annoying.. ANY ONE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS anyone know if there are parts for transfer case ?? have checked suspension for movement, bushes etc all tight no movement diff is fine a very little play in the diff but normal auto seems to be fine shifts fine grabs, not overheated does it when hot or cold?? any ideas thanks -thnkboutit-
fondo
Do you have auto-locking hubs? I had problems when mine auto-hubs went, mostly when I would have to reverse. Pull 'em off and see if there is ware on the teeth of both the male and female surfaces.
88pathoffroad
Not on a R50. R50's have drive flanges that are always locked, basically.

Chriskaw440
I would check your control arm bushings. My pathy had the same clonking problem and would feel like it was in the driveline, and once in the winter when I shifted to 4x4 it clonked really loud and hard. When taking off from a start, it would klunk just like you said, about a second after moving....sometimes never. turns out it was all caused by my rear lower control arm bushing being totally blown out, allowing the rear axle to move back and forth, basically slamming the bolt/pin against the control arm itself. Of course the vehicle also felt very loose on the road but I didnt see any symptom like that listed in your post so again, its just a thought to check the linkage that holds the axle to the frame. I thought my differential was wacked, glad it wasn't that!

solid snake
well since I got my tranny fixed, when i start taking off, I can hear this weird noise like a wire scraping on the pavement, it'll stop when I brake and come to a complete stop and then you can hear it again at low speeds. Once I'm over 50 you can hear the noise any more. Is this what seems to be happening to you. I listened more closely to it and it sounds like its between the front part of the tranny to the motor or in the passenger side wheel. cant really pin point it because I can only hear it while in motion, and I can be under the pathy while it's moving.
