Hi guys,

Well my pathy has about 102k on it and I am looking into getting the timing belt replaced and was wondering what else should be replaced while the mechanic has the engine apart?

Here is what i was quoted:

$500.00 for just the belt

Extra $190 WaterPump

Is that reasonable?

Anther place quoted me $600.00 for belt replacement and the guy said that includes the "seals".. what seals is he talking about? camshaft and crankshaft?

let me know what else should be replaced.

Thanks

-Mike

Strongly consider waterpump, t-stat, t-belt tensioner, by-pass hose (the short-run one by the t-stat housing which is a PITA to replace when it decides to let go), camshaft seals, the balance of your v-belts and upper and lower rad hoses. I know the cash register keeps ringing but I have yet to have one of these parts fail while my pathgrider has been sitting in my driveway.

You can price parts yourself to figure what they have in it for labor. Or most shops post their labor rates and use service books that have quoted standard times. From their its a matter of your preception of their value for their service. Prices will vary by area as well. $500 to some may seem like a good deal where other will feel like they are getting fleeced. To me it seems a bit high.

t-belt is around $30. there is quite a bit of work but can be done in one day as some have done on this forum. water pump should only be a charge for the pump really and i am pretty sure it's not 190.. 90 maybe. i don't think a genuine nissan pump is that much. you could always call a dealer.. it may be cheaper. lol .... but then lates over there are kinda steep. :P:D

and the rest what MinKC said is right on. look for slick's write up on the PITA bypass hose; it's good and has great pics.

The dealership quoted me $1500 for the above repairs :)

The other place quoted me about $900 for the T-belt, camshaft and crankshaft seals, water pump and T-stat

Yeah I could try and do it my self.. but my family has never had good luck taking apart the engines on Japanese vehicles :) I try too just repair the stuff thats on the outside of the engine :P

Hmm... well I didn't want to really spend 2/3 the price of my vehicle to get it repaired... but I suppose if it runs for another 100k it will be worth it.

thanks for your help

I got two quotes of $400 here in NJ. One said they'd do it for 400 even, another said "somewere around $400"

For just the timing belt?

Are you trying to make me feel bad about living on the west coast :P ahh yes the land of minimum wage at $7.93 an hour (highest in the US).... and union labor wage minimum of some ridiculous amount (somewhere above $12.00 an hour). although I suppose the east coast isn't that far behind us.

But thats besides the point....

I guess I will look at a few more Japanese auto repair places and see what kind of quotes I get.

Thanks

-Mike

sheeeeeeet.... you live in the land of pathy owners.. why don't you butter up to some of the WA members (like *coughs*casey T) and offer to give them $200 to do it and show YOU how to do it? sly
