radar
I changed my trans fluid during the summer and all was good but as the temps drop I have experienced a buzzing sound going from 1st-2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Goes away after a very short time as trans warms up. I put semi synthetic 75W90 in when I changed it. Can't find Redline in my area, wondering if anyone has used the Lucas 75W90 and if so, how was it in colder temps? My rig is a 99 Path with 5 spd. Simon
A buzzing sound? Sort of like a bark? If so, could be your throwout bearing is going. Does it do it only when you have the clutch depressed?
FUELER
Bearing hypoteses can be thrown out - sounds like sychros to me. Noise between gears could be synchros going bad or shifting improperly. It is possible that the sythetic oil is too slippery, causing the synchros and gears to clash when shifting. from http://www.barneymc.com/toy_root/techtalk/...ne/transoil.htm " Synthetic oil is too slick and thus the Synchros are not allowed to easily help change gears. I have tested this extensively, myself. When I first bought my 89 truck it shifted fine. I promptly changed the transmission oil to synthetic. It began to shift horrible when it was cold - a little better when it warmed up Moral of the story: Don't use synthetic oil in the tranny unless you put an additive in like GM Synchromesh. Supposedly, Redline MTL is good and has additives in it already. I've never tried this stuff, though. " Edited December 28, 2006 by FUELER
mws
Buzzing only when cold... hmmmm.... never heard buzzing as a symptom of a transmission issue. But if it only happens when cold and only in the first three gears, I suspect something with the synchros. And cold dino oil is much thicker than a pure synthetic, so I suspect the full synthetic may eliminate it. Unfortunately, I do not know anything about the Lucas Gear Oil, and I can't find anything of use on their website. I couldn't even find out if it was a GL4 or GL5 oil.... A very convenient and good priced source for the RedLine is Summit Racing: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.a...15&autoview=sku 1-3 days to your door just about anywhere in the US.... If you're east coast, I believe Jeg's also carries it. Double check in your manual what weight you need - I do not know for a '99. MT-90 is 75w90, MTL is 70w80. radar
Thks for the info, I would much prefer the redline, haven't located a Canadian distributor yet, will keep looking. WRT the throw out, it doesn't happen while the clutch is held in, only when moving the shifter, I had a trans mechanic take it for a drive, unfortunately it was warm at the time and all acted normal. If anyone knows a distrib for redline in Ontario Canada, would appreciate it, thks.
