front diff.

i was out two weeks ago, tooling along through the mud and me and ollie found a flat mud pitt, so we were doing donuts, i had to stop after ollie yelling at me, my front diff was chattering and no more 4x4. any idea's before i tear it apart? its like almost sounding 1/2 engaged or something.

Take the hubs off and check those first...

Look at your front drive axels also. I blew a CV joint and have the same symptoms

hmm i dont think its a CV,they look good,id get addition systoms when turning. im not a big 4x4 guy, why would removing the hub's make a diff?

If one were stuck and the other were not it may cause problems or the hubs themselves may be making noise.

well looks like k9sar is right lol, broken at the cv anyone know how much of a hassle replacing them are? i know on my VW's its like 20-30 mins per side.

CV Axle replacement

i dont think u have to go as deep as the write up says...i'd pull the hubs and the spindle lock nuts and snap rings...then hit the cv to axle bolts...push towards the spindle and drop down the end towards the axle and pull out from the inside and slide the new 1 in... dont hold me to that but i think it can be done that way...

 

if u try to get a used 1 be careful b/c the # of splines change somewhere between 87 and 95...im sure a lil search will clear that up...

They went from 27 spline in 87-89's, to 28 spline in 90+. Unless you're outside the US and have a 4-cylinder 4WD.
