Boat rack

Okay well I fly fish alot and want to put a boat rack on my Pathy.

It would be nice if it was easy to take off.

Anyway, it's a fiberglass boat, 12ft long, about 4.5ft wide and around 160lbs.

Anyone got an idea on how this would work?

I don't have much of a roof rack, just the .5" tall silver rails on either side with the threaded square pieces in them that slide around... :unsure:

Check out craigslist.com, There are usually some pretty good deals on trailers. Or just go to harbor freight and get a "trailer in a box" (assembly required) it is a new trailer you put together not bad at all if you just wanna haul that boat around and smaller stuff.

We've got a trailer for it, but trailers are a pain. Especially for the lakes that I go to, around here. A roof top carrier would be much easier. I was thinking getting a front receiver hitch and making something using both the rear and the front hitch... but I dont know

Your roof isn't intended to carry that much weight. 100lbs is the suggested limit.

 

Granted, I've exceeded that before myself, but I don't recommend it.

 

Pick up a Thule or Yakima rack as they'll support the weight much better than the factory crap. Just be sure you tie it down nice and tight!

If you're into fabbing, I would not hesitate to put 150 pounds on my roof bars... Heck, I've put well over that.

 

They do require drilling holes in the body and adding "hard points" to the inside of the sheet metal to distribute the load. Which requires removal of interior body panels and some fidgeting around.

I used 1/4" aluminum plate for the hard points. They are shaped to conform to the body sheetmetal, and are siliconed to the body so they stay in place when the bars are removed.
