Exhaust Cutouts

i like the way she sounds strait piped right now...and i've got a buncha friends that are into camaro's and trans-ams and they all have forbiden me to put exhaust back on it(god my neighbors loved me the other night when 1 of the neighbors on a bike wanted to out rev my truck...he lost walked over and goes what the hell is in that thing i was like uhh genuine rice)...so im thinking about the possiblilty of running cutous...the question is how i want to do it...

 

i thought about dual down both sides with some rock sliders and make it look something like the mustangs that run it down the sides and dump out in front of the rear tires but i think thats a lot of bending and work...

You'll lose what little torque these engines produce if you reduce the back pressure of the exhaust too much. Fun for those 3 a.m. burns through the neigborhood, but it won't really improve performance AFAIK. Maybe run a single 2.5" into a glasspack or something and dump it out in front of the rear wheel.

Yeah, I've run it with just the y-pipe and empty cat before, the drone drove me nuts and it actually lost some power.

If in doubt, you could buy some cheap cut-out's from places like JC Whitney, just to try it out. There's everything from simple bolt on/off, cable-actuated, to electric, etc. Probably won't help power, like has been said, but if you gotta do it, do it I guess.

if i do it i'll prob make my own and i figured i'd loose some pick but for some reason i always have these lil rice waggons and sometimes mustangs rev up at me at lights...it be nice to pop it open and blast their ears...hmm we'll see

cut the bungs out of a 55 gallon drum, weld them into your exhaust system, voila, instant free cutouts.

Just a word about dumping exhaust out in front of the rear tires: When Ford did it on the 97 F150 and light duty F250 they had to replace a whole bunch of right rear alloy wheels due to the corrosive nature of the exhaust. And talking to a couple of mechanics, they said they saw a lot of brake issues due to moisture getting into the right rear brake assembly. For 98 on, the exhaust was changed to go out behind the rear wheel.

 

So based on these experiences, I would not recommend dumping any exhaust out in front of the rear wheels.

hmm interesting.... i have steel wheels so that shouldnt be an issue and they're on their 3rd coat of krylon by me...now the drum issue is of some concern but if i managed to find the time/money to do a disk conversion then i shouldnt have to worry about that...

I've had a few mustangs with side exhaust, and never had a problem with wheels or paint. As long as you clean it from time to time and don't let it build up for years you won't have a problem.
