A/C Question

I know what the problem with my A/C is. The A/C box below the glove compartment has a massive hole in it from the last owner. The story is he had a gun in the glove box and it fell out and went off. The hole is at the very bottom and about the size of a pea. I was wondering, can I take it out, and weld a patch over it, or should I just buy a new one (I am not sure what it is called, maybe a cooler) The system cannot hold any pressure, so I need to fix it concidering my journey home is 30 miles and in Atlanta at around 93 degrees. What do you all suggest?

That be the evaporator core. And while it is feasible to repair, a replacement is only $71 plus shipping from Rock Auto. And then you will want the system purged, pressure tested, vacuumed down, and recharged.

If you do try to repair, remember that these operate at higher pressures than radiators and the like.

There is only one hole, as it grazed the bottom. It is not under any pressure as I can stick my pinkie into the core. I was wondering if I could put a small metal patch on it, or if that would be too dangerous.

What MWS was getting at is that when recharged the AC system is under great presure... it you "patch" it then you run the risk of the patch coming out and all of the presure being released into the cabin... Aside from the obvious saftey and health risks, there is also the fact that if it did happen you would have wasted time and money.

My opinion... replace it. Do it right, do it once and be done with it ;)
