Nothing like starting off the day in 20degree snow and a knot on the top of your head from teh (*^%$%# hatch.
been there... done that.
I used to have a pair of vice-grips in the back end to clamp on the strut. It scored the shaft a little and screwed up the seal but I figured, what the heck, they don't hold the hatch up as it is anyway. -
I wash mine every time it rains and quick drive across the creek will wash the frame. Quick and easy.

I checked mine. To remove them, you unscrew the balls from the hatch and they remain in the strut. However... with a 3-foot prybar and a 2x4, you can pull the old balls out of the socket. I just did that last night to see how they were assembled. Remove your old ones, hit the sockets with a little WD-40 and swirl them around to get all the gunk loose too. Throw the thing on the garage floor and put a board on the rod near the socket for support to stand on and hook the crowbar under the ball pry. It should pop off without too much sweat. Because the crowbar hooks on the nut side of the ball mechanism, it doesn't damage the ability to use it again. Alternatively, I may be willing to pull the other 3 and sell them to you.

I replaced them on my 95 and still have the originals on my workbench (it's been a year or so but I might need them for something

you know whats odd chiltons repair manual says that some pathfinders came stock with spring and leaf systems there was a whole how to repair page on them?
yet another reason to turn your chilton's manual into ash.
I have always had bad results with those frellin' aftermarket repair manuals. 'Tis now why I insist on a full set of factory service manuals with any vehicle I buy new or try to get my hands on a set if I buy used.

ok... I'll retract my opinion... but I still think welding it would be a nice touch.

hmmm.... is the tap now holding the housing in place? If it's anything loke my 95, those bolts are pretty large diameter. I'm sure you will lose a bit of strength with one missing but I doubt it's enough to drop your tranny while driving down the road. Also, the 4-banger doesn't generate enough torque on the tranny to possibly bust out the 3 remaining bolts by power alone. It'd probably take some serious off-roading to flex things enough to worry. Perhaps getting in there with a welder and making your own attachments. If you need to pull it apart again, you'll just have to grind out the welds or, better yet, drop it off at the dealership to replace the clutch and see if you can hear them cussing all the way at your house.

My cat settles for *hunting* my sock-covered feet when I walk around the house.
LOL and I'm sure those little teeth don't stop at the fabric. I had a cat for 18 years before she died. She loved to play 'scare the crap outta daddy'. She'd hide under my bed and when I got up in the morning, she'd grab my ankle, slip in a quick bite, and run like bejeebers. Other times, she'd be hiding and pounce out at me, then run. I got her good one day though. She was napping in one of those upright positions like only a cat can do and I snuck up behind her without being noticed. I flopped forward and slapped my arms on the ground on each side of her and barked at the same time. She launched about 3 feet up and 10 feet out... which became a problem since she was at the top of a flight of stairs when she did it. I must say, she did manage to land on her feet (at least initially) about 10 steps down. Then it got ugly as she tumbled her way to the bottom, trying to look like she was in control and meant to be looking like a rag-doll in a dryer. When she reached bottom, she whipped one of those "just wait until your asleep" looks at me.

I've got a 95 w/ AT and I usually cruise around 90 on the way to/from work. I'll check my RPMs.
4600 RPM w/ OD off, 3100 w/ OD on cruising at 90 (which was tough in rush hour traffic in the rain)

in less than a month, we went from 1.70 to 2.15 then dropped to 2.06. I guess they ran it high so we'd all relax when it settled at only 36 cents above what it was before instead of 45 cents. BASTARDS!

My 3 year old gets his first crack at sailing on the weekend of July 4. We're sailing down to Penn's Landing in Phila to watch the fireworks from the boat. We typically anchor about 200 yards from the barge that launches them and just lay on the deck and look straight up. No crowds, no traffic, etc.
