  1. I had a broken strut mount that made sounds like that .

    My guess is strut bearing.

So how would I check/replace these things?

And to CV- they look good on the outside, and considering the noise still appears when I have the hubs unlocked and CVs not turning, that probably isn't it.

  2. My 2002 Pathy 4x4 makes a popping noise when the wheel is fully cranked to the left, specifically at low speeds, and is highly audible when backing out of a parking space for instance. I would describe the sound as almost a creak, but mainly a pop with resonance. I can easily replicate it, and happens the most when in reverse, but also appears when moving forward. I have cranked the wheel fully to the right and left and I see no rubbing, and it seems to emanate from the front passenger suspension. It was there both before and after I installed Manual Hubs.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

  3. I have 245/75r16 Toyo Open Country AT IIs on my factory 02 SE wheels, NO spacing. I initially had minor rubbing, and I mean extremely minor when at full lock. But it was an extremely easy fix, if you can handle cutting out a piece of paper, you can do it. I just pushed the stock fender well forward, screwed it in place with the factory screws, and cut at an angle a tiny piece of the plastic bumper. Easy as pie.

    I have a pictures here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/84010-2002-Pathfinder-(R50)-Build-Thread-by-Allof75/page5

    Hope it helps!

  4. My pathfinder is stock height and it has taken every off road challenge I've thrown at it with aplomb. I call it "shockingly capable." I can keep up with and occasionally pass locked and lifted rigs with the right, careful technique, which of course is the key in all off road driving. But the R50 is really the underdog off road extraordinaire- it looks like a mall crawler but it'll do things I never thought it could. And this is with open/open diffs. I want to say all have a 'center diff lock' which apportions 50/50 power to the front and rear axles, but I could be wrong on this.

Either way, I only have larger tires (245/75r16 Toyo Open Country AT IIs) and upgraded shocks and struts (rear Bilstein 4600s, front KYB GR-2s) but stock height, and I couldn't be happier. The power advantage over the 4runner 3rd gen is huge (yet is significantly cheaper), and the quality and refinement slaughters the XJ. It fits extremely well on narrow trails, and has nearly identical approach/departure/wheelbase to a new Xterra without costing $25000.

I would suggest skidplates if you're not planning on lifting, you can have them made or buy them from 4x4parts like I did: https://www.4x4parts.com/nissan/pathfinder-set-of-skid-plates-p-3455.html

*My biased 2 cents* Though before buying mine I test drove Cherokees, Monteros, 4runners, Xterras, Foresters, Land Cruisers, and a myriad of other 4x4s, as well as having experience with a 1st gen explorer, 100 series land cruiser, and thousands of miles off pavement in our current 2003.5 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Hemi.

  5. Can you ask your buddy where he heard about that? I've been digging into a bunch of liberty forums for more info and coming up dry.. I just want to find at least one piece of evidence before I give it a try.

    x2!

Very interested if KJ springs work because that opens up a myriad of options! And most likely cheaper. I'd imagine someone just needs to measure and determine spring rates? Any more info is very much appreciated

  6. I got a quote for a custom Magnaflow single out cat-back, all stainless, at Automotive Excellence, here in Huntington Beach, and it was $375 dumped and another $75 if I wanted a tip. It's definitely on my to-buy list, and it's good to hear it helps mpg.

  7. You also have the AT-2's?! nicee man, I actually really like the silver in contrast with the matte black and black windows. I wish i could tell ya that the chilkoot is above the SE but its not, Its a 5speed, manual transfer case, LSD, Cloth interior, no sunroof, tow package.

Indeed I do! They've done admirably, and like theexbrit said, they took me everywhere I needed to go this weekend, minus one hill, which wasn't the tire's fault, so much as theexbrit's ruts.

You have a very nice color combo, I'm hoping to go for that eventually. Just without the stripes. I'm thinking of powdercoating my factory wheels gunmetal grey, and getting a limo tint come summertime. My ventvisors should help a little too.

That Chilkoot package sounds awesome! That's exactly how I'd get my pathy from the factory, just with an auto, not because I can't drive stick (because I can and did it daily for a while) but because the torque converter makes it so much easier to operate off road.

  8. Great to see another Silver pathfinder on here! Not to mention one with the same tires! :D

I'm glad to hear that they did well in the snow, I haven't gotten a chance to test them out.

As a side note, what exactly is the Chilkoot package? It seems to only be available in Canada, is it above or below SE?

  9. They will fit no problem! I know of a 2002 R50 with the same exact tires, he had to do a *very* miniscule trimming of the front bumper which is not even noticeable. You'll like the tires and the slight height gain.

I'm that guy! I have the EXACT same tires, and they fit fine on my 02 Path. Here's a link to give you an idea.

This is them fitted, and page 5 has pictures of the trimming I had to do. Basically I just pushed back the splash guard, screwed it into place permanently with the stock hardware, and then just cut the very tip of the bumper. Super easy.

Hope it helps even if it's a little late!

  10. Welcome!

I havent seen any aftermarket "inserts" like your asking about. You'd probably have to make one or modify one.

I had given a Yakima MegaWarrior roof basket a try for a very short time, then sold it. One of those might be suitable for the flat style gas/water containers. Unlikely suitable for "jerry can" style containers.

I ended up going with a roofbox. They are more aerodynamic (I know it sounds silly, but I swear I could feal the drag with the roof basket). Plus most roofboxes can lock. The one I have is a Thule, and it's pretty good sized, yet lite enough when empty for me to install/un-install without any help.

As far as sleeping in your Pathfinder, you might want to give it a try just to see how you fit. I have to sleep at angle to fit, which means unloading gear etc. I suppose if I were to camp in it for extended periods I would just remove one of the rear seat bottoms (the part that flips up), then I could lie down without unloading gear.

I just recently found out that my front seats can flip flat (I think someone on here had pointed it out), but I don't know that I could sleep in them. Its worth a try though, as that would likely give you the best use of space.

Tips/suggestions: Perhaps give some thought to a rear tire carrier. You can set them up to carry fuel/water cans, and that would be easier for you to access. Check out the slide out/roll up awnings (tarp) that can bolt to a roof rack. Having a quick pullout awning would be great to have. Some of them have all kinds of extras like mosquito netting, privacy walls etc.

I know I can sleep in the Pathfinder, that's one of the reasons I bought it- I'll just take the seatbottoms out and fashion a sleeping platform out of plywood to run on top of the seatback and past so I can sleep flatly. I'll post pics of this too when finished. To keep everything "private" I'll get the rear windows in 5% tint most likely (shout out to Tint Pros in Huntington Beach!) and get some window vents to keep the ventilation tolerable. It'll be a long project, but definitely worthwhile.

Anyway, here are the gas cans I'm talking about, on pretty much the type of rack I'm looking for (though I'd like it closer to the roof itself). As you can see they're quite flat, and a set of Maxtrax should hopefully fit right over them.

  11. Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, and just bought a 2002 SE Pathy 4x4 with the factory "thick" roof rack, much like Xterras'. I'll post up a build sooner or later, I'm planning on making this an Expedition Pathfinder- going camping/sleeping in the pathy for days/weeks at a time, and exploring the country all the while.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you know of an insert to the factory rack, like the one pictured (sorry for the size), except in a metal mesh of sorts.

I'd like to have one 4 gallon rotopax gas "can" and one 4 gallon water "can", topped off with two maxtrax on top.

Can anyone help me with this?

    Thanks!
