  1. do a 'poor mans' charge test....i've done it many a time on the side of the road beofre smacking my alt. with a hammer to get me home.

    Start the truck.

While it's running, disconnect the positive lead on the battery, be careful not to touch it to metal.

If the truck dies, the alternator isn't charging. If it stays running, you are good to go.

Good luck. post results. I'm on Alternator number 2.5 right now, so i feel your charging pain.

You can clean out the alternator too, i do this every time i change my oil. Take the alternator off, carefully take it apart, clean everything out, rinse with tons of water, regrease the bearings and brushes. Every since i started doing this, i have had no charging issues (as opposed to smacking my brand new alternators with said hammer many times on the side of the road, always goes over well while you're on a date, lol)

  2. Am I the only one with an actual picture of their first car?

no scanner. But, my 'quest was almost identical. No side exhaust, mine had tinted windows, was lower, and had polished wheels, but other than that, same color, etc.

I want to buy another one.....they've become dirt cheap these days

  3. I think the people with short lists aren't trying hard enough

    Since May 2005:

    2 starters

    3 alternators

    2 sets of tires

2 rear axle shafts and associated bearings and bits

    1 cv shaft

    Centerlink

    Tie rod ends

    fan clutch

    A/C system

    Front Bumper

    crushed fender

    barb wire 'rash'

    front signal lights

    drivers parking light

    busted snorkel

    Auto Hubs

A ton of drivers side body damage

    Usual dents and 'pinstriping'

There's still wood in the paint on the passenger side in an interesting pinstripe

    2 sets of shocks

    1 stock LSD

Removed all 4 mudflaps (still unreplaced)

    Bent spare tire rack

Busted stud on spare tire rack

  4. Are you getting ready for Recovery/Rescue for the car Rally Race in March?

I kinda forgot about that...good bug out for the pathy...and hopefully i won't be in the same state as i was at the rally on Nov. 6th

BTW, did you ever post the recovery pics from that rally?

  5. What's happening in March that it's your deadline?

    I wanna go wheeling!!!!!!!!!!

I wheeled/camped every weekend from august to mid-october, then got a second job, then quit the second job and got sick....no time to fix my truck, no time to wheel...total BS!

Feb's a pretty busy month for me, but i should be able to get everything done to the truck and then go hit the trail.

  6. Ok, so i've spent the last two hours ignoring my girlfriend and trying to figure out what shocks to get that will allow for more travel while still bolting up properly and without spending an arm and a leg. I have 2"-3" of poormans lift (tbars and ford coils). I had a parts truck a while ago that had RS5000's on it. I compared them to the stock shocks and struts and they had exactly the same travel, and the same uncompressed and compressed dimensions. The recommended 9000X rancho's for the pathfinder have LESS travel than stockers/5000's

I stole a bunch of info off rancho's site and came up with this:

    Stock pathy rear shocks:

    14" Compressed

    22.250" Uncompressed

    8.250" Total Travel

    Stock 93-98 Toyota T100 4WD Rear shocks

    14.875" Compressed

    24" Uncompressed

    9.125" Total travel

Not bad, almost an extra inch of travel

    Stock 72-93 Dodge D100, D150 2wd 1/2 Ton pickup rears

    15" Compressed

    23.750" Uncompressed

    8.750" Total Travel

    An extra 1/2" of Travel

    Stock 87-91 V3500 Chevy 1 ton 4wd pickup rears:

    16" Compressed

    26.250" Uncompressed

    10.250" Total Travel

    2"! will they fit?

    1961-1971 Dodge 2wd 1 ton Fronts are:

    15.375" Compressed

    24.250" Uncompressed

    8.875" Total Travel

As far as the fronts (this is proving more difficult to find something longer travel)

    Stock:

    9.7000" Compressed

    14.990" Uncompressed

    5.290" Total Travel

I can't find something with the same mounting and longer travel.

Any help would be appriciated!!! and yes i did a search first, and came up with nothing.

  7. I've had bronchitis for the last couple weeks and its seriously hindered my ability to work on the truck. Finally started feeling better and last night did the following:

    Changed oil

    Installed steering stabilizer

    Swapped tranny fluid for MT90

Cranked drivers side t bar (was sagging a little)

Topped up rear diff (don't ask)

    Bled and refilled clutch

    cleaned throttle body

    cleaned MAS

    cleaned K&n filter

A great start to what i need to do before march.

    Next on the list:

Finish custom (and uber cool) rear bumper (pics to come)

replace rear axle housing, axles, and brakes

    Passenger side CV shaft

    Repack front bearings

    Timing belt and water pump

Then, it's back to fun stuff!

Thanks to all the threads on here, and my buddy johnny's nissan expertise, stage one only took about 2 hours last night (including beer breaks)

i love my truck again -bounce-

  8. How does it fell now with the synthetic? Do you notice any difference?

The 'fluid' that was in the tranny had the consistency of tea. It was so full of water i am surprised the tranny didn't just blow up.

It feels much smoother, engagements are way better, and the whining has quieted down by a huge amount.

    Definitely was worth the $60

  9. Vidro....easy fix for that....simply fill through the shifter hole. Just remove the shifter. It's really easy. 1 snap ring and you're done. Then you can put in the required 5.1L of oil, as opposed to 3.6, regardless of whether it's dino, or synthetic. :cool2:

Did my 5 qts of redline last night. Didn't bother removing the shifter. Made a fat tube that stuck in the fill hole nice and tight, filled it up. Put the plug in fast once it's full. Done and done. I lost maybe a tablespoon of fluid. No shifter removing, etc.

  10. Sorry to postjack, but, has anyone done this? My AC is shot, and has been for 2 years, so I'm used to no AC. I would like to relocate my Alternator to that spot. If someone else has a write up, or at least, some pics of how it was done, that would help alot.

    i second that! :takebow:

  11. the terrano diesel motor is a R3M. Some mods will be required to fit it into the cradle, but it's not too bad. You can get a used r3m from an engine importer with harness and ECU for about $2000 cdn. There's a world of difference in the tranny gearing, so i'd import a tranny too. At that point, just get a whole front clip imported from a vehicle importer. The average price i found for a front clip shipped to calgary was $3500 cdn.

Let me know how it goes...gas sucks!

  12. I fell in love and haven't (really) been burned

But I gotta tell how I feel in (and subsequently out and back in) love with wheeling

I've always been a huge performance car guy. I owned a 68 Mustang 390 convertible before I even had a driver's license, parted it out, bought a 1988 Conquest Tsi that eventually took me to 13 second 1/4 mile times and the performance bug continued on. I was 17, and laid down cash for a barely used 1997 eclipse GSX. Did every possible mod to it and took me to low 12's and 1st place showcar trophies. I never understood why people bought trucks and SUV's if they didn't need it for work. I thought off roading was dumb. Until I drove on the beach in NJ in the eclipse and spun AWD dougnuts, and got it high centered on a sand dune. It was freakin cool (the tow truck and body shop bills, however were not). Couldn't insure the eclipse when I moved to canada, so bought a beater 1992 Jetta, biggest POS ever, still had money to burn but didn't know what I wanted. My brother at the time had a 1993 Bronco EB and took me out wheeling one day. 2 days later I bought his wife's Jeep TJ (wrangler) from her. Went wheeling the day after and snapped a front axle. Go to Modern Motors here in Calgary and plunk down some dough for a lift kit, 32"s and get the axle fixed. Go wheeling a month later and snapped a front axle. Get pissed off, go to chrysler and get it fixed. Next month, guess what happens? That's right I went back to maclean creek (where all the other axle-snapping happened) and break ANOTHER front axle. I knew nothing of upgraded diffs, etc, I came from the performance world, right?

Sell the POS TJ, swear to never wheel or buy a truck ever again. Buy a 91 civic (yeah, yeah, shut up) and do a motor swap and other go fast sh*t to it. Sell it six months later when I need something to cart clients around in. Buy a 97 explorer, and in my 'I hate 4x4ing' ways, lower it, rims, and a supercharger. F*ck offroading is still my attitude.

Financial difficulties start creeping up after 9/11 when I lose my job and can't find work. Sell the explorer, buy an Integra, keep it mostly stock for $$ reasons. I make friends in the Calgary DSM club with a guy who has a 1g eclipse and a Suzuki Samuari. Next thing you know, we're wheeling with it, taking the doors off and cruising around, etc. I buy a talon, and shortly thereafter, I split up with the wife who gets the 'teg. The talon, albeit running strong, is plauged with other issues. After finally blowing it up for the last time, I'm talking with my dad about what I should do (beater car, finance something nice, etc.) He tells me to 'not do anything for two weeks'. Ok, I trust the old man, I bide my time and get rides for two weeks. My parents show up at work and tell me they want to take me for a nice dinner, my dad's coming out of retirement and is starting as CFO for a company here. Cool, ok, super. "let's go back to the house for some more wine and cocktails". Ok, I guess I'm staying at mom and dad's. Pop opens up the garage to show me the new present he bought himself, a new mustang GT ragtop (he had a 5.0 and a saleen ragtop at different times in NJ). I point to his Pathfinder that he paid an arm and a leg for and say "What the hell are you going to do with that, why didn't you trade it in" "oh, they wouldn't give me anything for it" Dad fumbles around in his pockets and asks if I have any money on me, he wants to go to the store, but wallets in the house. "sure, I got like $200 on me" as I take my wallet out. Takes the $200 and gives me the keys to the pathy. "don't worry about it, I know the talon's dead, again, and you need some wheels, the registration is signed and in the glove box"

So I'm like, holy sh*t, my parents have always been very well off, but never gave me a handout. My dad helped me buy the mustang by loaning me the money when I was 13 when I bought it and that was the first and only time they'd ever helped me out with a vehicle. All the cars I bought, mods, insurance, maintenance, etc. Was up to me. The rule of the house was you pay rent as soon as you have a job, in school or not, you work fulltime or you go to school and work part time, and you pay for everything yourself. Which I'm very grateful for now, as I've learned a lot about the way things ought to be for a kid growing up and I work for everything I have.

So now, after all that, i go wheeling (see my 'how not to introduce yourself to a 4x4 club post) and my truck kicked all ass...and kicked what my TJ ever thought possible.

I love that truck, and i'm going to be very sad to see it go.

  13. No disrespect, Precise1, but donation arrangements do not work. This isn't perfect land, it's the me first gimme gimme selfish world wide web, the issue with voluntary donations is only the regulars are going to put in, the guy who saves some bucks by combing through tech threads isn't going to put in jack sh*t. I tried instituting this on my board at first as well, and so did Brian on 4wheeler, and ran into the same issues. I wasn't proposing a mandatory fee, but a premium membership esp. for sale boards is a no brainer and extra perks like statikuz suggested is very easy to set up in the control panel on invision. Paying the site is uber easy to set up on invision.

And, since i can only cite previous examples, we've both seen paying memberships skyrocket since institution of these things.

Any admin/mod that would like to discuss this privately, PM me.

  14. Well, if we're sharing body damage stories, this happened at Waiporous cleanup this year, very very bad night:

What a great day on the trail, truck performed better than it ever has, new hubs and tires were fantastic, and i only high centered myself twice. We had no trail breaks and no one got hurt. It did turn into a long day, but we got more accomplished than any of us thought possible. Then i decided that i wanted a warm bed to sleep in, so at around 1:30, i figured i'd go home. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Highway 40, I come up on a curve in the road, i have a rock wall on the right, a deer that has stopped directly in the middle of the road maybe one car length in front of me(big bastard, too) and a ditch in front of me. I went with door number three, locked up the wheels, and kept it pointed for the ditch. Unfortunatly, the bank was steeper than it looked and pitched me into the ranchers barbed wire fence, hitting one of the supports head on. Now i'm heading for a tree, not a huge one, about as thick as my leg, but it'll still mess up the truck. Manage to save it a few feet in front of the tree and start to shake the stars out. My coffee maker, camp stove, a tow shackle, and a bottle of water all managed to make a beeline for my head when i hit the fence, so i'm slightly sore. Ok, no big deal, truck still runs, managed not to break any windows, the snorkle took the brunt of the hit. I find my parking light flung around 40 feet from the truck, hop back in and start the drive home. Uh oh, truck's not charging. My alternator started giving me trouble on the trail through all the water and i think the impact and jolt was enough straw to break the camel's back. Turn the radio and heat off. I managed to crawl till about 5 km's outside of airdrie before it just wouldn't go anymore. By this point it's almost 4 in the morning, i pull off, completely off camber mind you, into the ditch and decide it's time for a nap, i was also as coherent enough to send eric a text but didn't bother calling cuz i was way too tired to get rescued. Nine AM rolls around and i fall out of the truck when it's time too pee as i forgot how off camber i was. Somehow, the truck miraculously starts and i make it to Totem and Co-Op in Airdrie before it dies again. Grab some Timmys and Eric shows up, get the truck home and the alternator is toast my hood appears to have been attacked by a grizzly bear from all the barb wire rash, not to mention my nissan symbol is somewhere in a ditch, and the nasty dents in the front of the hood and the front crossmember, more side damage, and rash on the mirror. What a great weekend.
