1995 pathfinder-turns over but wont start

I need help here fellas! I have a 95 and it died in the middle of driving and won't start now. I heard what I can best describe as a "proof" while accelerating and then it died, and won't come back to life. It turns over like normal, and I don't hear a valve that may have gotten sucked in. It's baffling me. Any ideas guys? Thanks!!

Dizzy rotor screw backed out? Check air fuel spark.

definitely check the simple things first.... I have see coils go 'poof' and therefor no spark.

Surely it have to be the ignition system. Start with the coil and distributor. Also check the fuel delivery.

Check for spark. If you've got no spark, take the distributor cap off and watch while someone turns the key. If the rotor doesn't spin, the poof was your timing belt. Hopefully it wasn't that. See if you can hear the fuel pump hum when you turn the key on, check the fuse box to see if anything in there went poof.

Dbolt - Did you find what the problem was? I just had my 97 out on the beach and the same thing happened. My son was driving he didn't mention the "poof" sound, but died while driving and then would not restart. It has spark and the engine cranks, same as yours. Thanks for any suggestions!
