I, having never even touched a tranny, took out the output shaft of my 4wd no reverse tranny, and swapped it into a good 2wd tranny off a 240sx. So, just to let you know. It can be done.

That's good to know...

 

Have to put it all back together (the truck) and tested it out? And are the trannys the same model number... important to know because of material internal component quality and exact gear ratios

Yep, same part number, just completely different output shaft. I got a stellar deal on it, so i just had to try it out. I also found the problem on people losing reverse. For me it was the pump shaft. The tranny pump was pretty burred up and the sealing ring was gone. The new one was night and day in better shape. If you lose reverse, I would bet money it is the pump not pumping enough fluid to engage it.
