timing belt replacement

It is time to change my timing belt as my baby has 117,000 on her and I do not know if it has ever been changed. I did a search and was not satisfied with the results. so I figured i would just ask you guys. You have all helped me out a lot in the past. so here it goes, does anybody have a step by step process on changing the t-belt?? pics would be awesome. and can you guys tell me what tools i will need for the job. I not done much engine work but i hear it is not too hard to change the t-belt. any tricks or things i need to remember when doing this would also help. thanks guys and girls. :gossip:

Sure....but it wont be all that helpful to you.

 

Step 1.) Buy a service manual, if you have not done so already. For this procedure, the Hayne's actually does a good job...for once. The FSM isn't that great for it.

just start taking stuff off the front, then the cover itself and there it is. now, rmember to set TDC BEFORE you take the old belt off. you may also want to double check by counting the teeth in between. slick knows the count and it's in the forum multiple locations. search may yeald those numbers. also, there are two methods to tightening the belt right. 88 discussed them both in multiple threads.

 

then you just reasseble in reverse order - and that's what all the manuals will tell you. some things to consider "while you're in there": h2o pump, cam seals, electric fan mod, tranny cooler mod (AT only.)

Link to 97 pics and parts list. Also the Haynes is good, but if you use the feeler gauge method to set the tension I think the feeler gauge size is listed wrong. Otherwise the steps are covered pretty well.
