wheel366
Well, the hottest part is where it bolts to the heads and they still have the coating. I looks to me like the whole pipe was no coated or they did a crappy job. I'll either email them or call them when I get a chance. By the way, I only have 1100 miles on them. I just emailed them. We'll see what they have to say. Edited February 17, 2006 by wheel366
wheel366
On a different note, I ordered my SliderZ yesterday. I got the 4crawler Ultimate extra wide with the POR 15 and black top coat with gray tape and 1" kickouts in the front and rear. YAY! Another 605 down the drain. wheel366
Well, this day officially just got worse. The shop called and told me that they got my cams back from the engine dealer. He said the cams were damaged and look like they were oil starved. That's another $560 I lost on this deal. Bringing the total to $2560 in lost parts. Now, I'm really mad! I WANT the cams, but how do I justify another $560 on them? I can take the other guy to court and probably win, but there is no way I get get the money out of him. Simon
He had cams in his old engine. It was fried.....got a replacement engine.....didn't install the cams until the new engine was broken in.....found out the aftermarket cams that were in his old engine are shot. Wheel, correct me if I'm wrong here?
k9sar
ah. ok. just wondering cause I have a set of OEM cams from my 95 (unless Slick wants them too)
wheel366
Simon, you are correct. I have to see what I am going to do. I might have to threaten the IRS and see if that works. I still have a bunch of other things to buy for my beast and adding an additional $560 is not in the budget.
wheel366
I finally got a response from Thorley on the headers. I'll post it below. Good Morning Rich, After reviewing the pictures I would say that something has caused the exhaust temp to be a lot higher than normal. Has the engine been rebuilt anytime recently? Have you replaced the catalytic converter yet? Have the O2 sensors been replaced yet? I would not be inclined to warranty these out at this point based on the pictures provided. -Sean They have been installed on a brand new factory remanufactured engine that I bought in January and had installed in January. The CATS and the O2 sensors have not been replaced with the new engine. They were inspected prior to install. -Rich Good Morning Rich, That would be the cause of the coating failure. A new/rebuilt engine usually puts out exhaust temps way beyond the normal realm of that coating. I also highly recommend changing the cats and O2 sensors every 60K miles. The cats do become clogged with debris that would cause a incorrectly flowing exhaust. This usually causes exhaust temps to be higher than normal too. Thanks -Sean Sean, I just got off the phone with the shop that did the install. The state that the CATS and the O2 sensors fine. They also called the company that rebuilt the engine and they state that if a new engine is hotter than a used engine, it is only by a couple of degrees. Considering your statement that "A new/rebuilt engine usually puts out exhaust temps way beyond the normal realm of that coating", that would mean that I would only be able to install these headers on a used engine. No where in the documentation nor your website does it state "no new engines" nor does it state "CATS and O2 sensors must be replaced prior to install". According to the shop that did the install and purchase of the motor, if the problem did indeed stem from CATS or the O2 sensors I would have other symptoms which I do not. Looking at the pics, it seems to me that they were coated in some spots but others were missed. -Rich Rich, An engine being broken in will produce temps above and beyond that of an engine already broken in. Ultimately, at this point, we can do this; Send me the headers, I will have them inspected for coating defect and either replaced or recoated and then I will send them back. This is all explained on both the web site and possibly through the paperwork that came with the headers depending on who you bought the kit through. This is the best I can offer. -Sean
Slick
ah. ok. just wondering cause I have a set of OEM cams from my 95 (unless Slick wants them too) nah. i am gunna buy some larger than stock after market cams for the other motor build (the "illegal" motor sly ) so i won't be in need of any extra stock size cams (i have the ones in the purple turds heads that i did not reinstall as spares) thanks tho K9.. but i may be after those heads minus cams/valves/etc.... can i have the fuel rail sly my god wheel.. WTF? you are just NOT having a good time of this are you? if there's anything i can do let me know. almost makes all my issues seem irrelevant
wheel366
Oh Slick if you only knew. I just got my estimate for the work done on my beast. To fix box sides of the frame under in the rear wheel well, new license plate light bracket with lights, stoppers for glove box, fix dent in door and fix holes under rear seats, I got hit with a $2048 bill. The bracket and the holes in the frame were $1000 just by themselves. That hurt me. It's another $700 for the rest of the stuff. Thats sandblast and paint tire carrier and brushguard, new rubber flaps in front wheel well and check and repair all wether stripping. I felt like crying, I almost had a heart attack. I still need to take the truck back to the shop and have them take the headers out so I can send them back to Thorley, have new O2 sensors put in, high flow cats installed and all bushings checked then have the headers re-installed. I wonder what that is gonna cost. There goes getting a chip and exhaust for my S4. I'll have to wait a couple of months or longer now for that stuff. And to top it all off, this has been like the worst week ever for me at work. To much drama and politics!

She passed with flying colors includign the emissions. Crap like yadda yadda max limit 745, measured value 61... etc. Nothing was even close to being near the limit. soooo... what that means is that I will be less stingy on the remaining VG30E parts I still have... includign the fuel rail and injectors. I'll post a thread in a couple days once I see what I have left.
wheel366
Yeah, I was way under the numbers for emmissions also. When I failed it was because of the rear license plate lights. I went back today and passed. I had until tomorrow to go back. Can you say cutting it close? I'm taking here to Mass. tomorrow for a business trip. YAY! I had one out as well. I've established a good relationship with the guy who runs the local shop where I go and he just passed it and said to make sure I pop into walmart or somewhere and replace the light. I bring him lots of business because of his work ethic. In PA, as soon as you drive off the property, they can charge you for a full inspection even if you are just bringing it back 20 minutes later after replacing a buned out bulb. This guy will tell you what's wrong and as long as you get back in a reasonable amount of time, he won't recharge you. When I had my exhaust stud problem, he failed it and I took it back nearly a month later and he didn't charge me for a second inspection. gotta love it!
