I just bought a Commodore 5 speed. Now I have to get a divorced transfer case from an MK Patrol. I do not want the pumpkin to be on the L/H side anymore. It will be on the right. Yes, I will be getting rid of everything Nissan in the power train. I am not sure I can fit the divorced tansfer case yet but it will not be lack of effeort that beats me. It will go in one way or another!

 

The plan is to get another MQ live axle (keep the pumpkin standard) and mate it to the GQ radius arms. I will be losing the GQ sping and shocker housing and putting coil overs on via a hoop instead.

 

Does it ever end?

Are you doing this for clearance issues, different gearing or better front suspension ? I was under the impression that the Nissan trannys and drive train were pretty rugged and reliable... :shrug:

Sh!t B, I had not thought of end ratios. I will look them up. I have an awful feeling I will not be able to find what my Nissan box is.

 

Main reason for doing this is for continuity in the power train. The Nissan box as a rule is not that strong. I did spend $1500 to beef mine up to take the torque of the Holden engine. Don't forget, it is out of a 4 cyl. The holden gear box is stronger and when it finally goes in I will be able to get parts for it anywhere. If for example my clutch went today, I would have to order a special clutch to be sent to me. God knows how long that could take. At least a few days!

 

Second reason is the front diff housing. As you know it was flipped so the pumkin would be on the left. That alone was a two day job. If I ever bent the front I will be up for rather big $$ to put in another. At least if the housing stays stock (so to speak) it will not be too hard to replace.

 

The 3rd reason. Hoops and coil overs, why not?

 

This is still in dream stage even though I bought the gear box already. I am not sure the MK divorced TC will even go under yet. I am sure that it will one way or another.

 

One thing is certain though. I will not start this little adventure untill I have everything ready to go. That includes new fabbed Xmembers and all brackets made up and ready to weld up or bolt in. This will be a weekend job MAX! A day to do would be a more reasonable time frame. Depends on how much beer is consumed. :beer:

Thanks, yes, I had forgotten... Everything you said makes sense and you certainly know what you are doing ! What you label as easy would be an undertaking for me. Lets hope you aren't missing something ! ;):D

Easy on the beer though, especially around the welder !

This is the ratios for the Holden 5 speed. I hope to have the ratios for MY Nissan box tomorrow. If they are similar it will go ahead. If not, then who wants to buy a Holden 5 speed? :D

Second: 2.19

Third: 1.40

Anyway, sounds like a great project made even better by the fact that it will fit "one way or another" Those are always the best! :D

 

The feeling of accomplishment is even higher when your victorious! :aok:

 

Hopefully, the ratios work out and you can go ahead with this project.

I have the ratios for my Nissan box. And guess what? Yep you guessed it. They are just about the same as the Holden box.

 

My Nissan box (keeping in mind others may be different) Is a follows.

 

 

NISSAN...................................................... HOLDEN.

 

1st. 3.592...................................................3.83

 

2nd. 2.246..................................................2.19

 

3rd. 1.415...................................................1.40

 

4th. 1.0 as all boxes are and.........................1.0

 

5th. 0.821....................................................0.81

 

How f*cking close is that? I am pretty happy at the moment.

 

Now to see if a divorced transfer case from an MK will fit. If it does then I will start gathering the gear needed to do the swap straight away. I am not rushed to do it so I have decided not to change anything untill the clutch goes. That can be sped up too. ;)

Since we're on the subject of Gear Ratio's, I have a question. Now as you probably have figured out by now I know next to nothing about the mechanics of a vehicle. I'm learning as fast as I can but of course its a slow learning curve. Did some research on my own on Understanding Automotive Gear Ratio's and I obviously understand the physics involved and so forth. But I am a little stumped on a something you guys were just talking about. You just finished mentioning that the Axle you picked up had a gear ratio similar to the one from your Pathy so you were pleased. Curious. Does the Front and Rear axles have to have the same or Very close Gear ratio's or can one be significantly different then the other. This may be a Stupid Question to those a little more Mechanically sound then I but I really have no Idea. And Further, I mentioned once before in a thread I posted about SAS options on the Idea of a Rockwell axle going in and someone mentioned that the Gear Ratio started at like 6:1. If I am understanding things properly Wouldn't you want a Gear Ratio or 6:1 for Crawling? If one could find 2 axles with a gear ratio around 6:1 would it not be advisable to use those? Is it aPower thing or a Gear thing.... *looks around* perhaps I'm just a little Slow.

Well, what it boils down to is that you have the same final drive ratio front and rear. Depending on the set up, it doesn't necessarily matter how you get there. For example, on the Pathys the transfer case only drives the front axle so the gearing from it could be different, then adjusted for in the front pumpkin. I don't know if this is the case, just spouting theory.

I think the real issue with the Rockwell is the size and weight...

The gear ratios I was refering to were for the gear box. The Holden gear box and Nissan gear box ratios are very close to each other. Thus making it a fine candidate for a transplant for my Pathy. I say "my Pahty because of the different diff ratios. With 3 different diff ratios there maybe 3 different gear box ratios too. You can have a variant in the gear boxes but it may effect your final drive and fuel economy. What you can't have a variant in is your diff ratios. They have to be the same. The Pathfinders have the following diff ratios.

 

4.8xx:1

4.6xx:1

4.3xx:1

 

These can never be mixed and matched. The diff centers spin at different speeds. If your front diff is 4.8, then your rear has to be the same.

 

As for the 6:1 ratio, one would expect to be able to climb walls with a ratio like that. You would also want to be able to fit 46 inch wheels to your Pathy if you wanted any kind of fuel economy. :beer:
