Lubbing My Hubs!?

Recently we were disscussing shifting on the fly.

 

I tried this and I got a very loud clunking noise.

 

Someone then said that if this happens then I need to lube my hubs pronto.

 

I need help on how to do this.

 

I am 16 this is my first car, I love my Pathfinder.

 

Unfortunately I do not know much about cars, but I am trying to learn.

 

So anyways, how do I lube my hubs because it sounds like I need to do this because I will be going off road and I need to make sure my 4 wheel drive is at 100%.

well, you gotta take them off the car and thorughly clean them, then repack them with grease.. i packed the pretty full with good hi temp stuff. from the factory they have very little lube in them.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a manual. This sort of thing is well covered in them. I find Chiltons to be ok for most anything you would want to do. They can be had for about $20 and will pay for themselves on the first job...

That said, basically, all you need is an allen wrench for the 6 socket head cap screws (5 or 6mm, I cant remember) and maybe snap ring pliers but I don't think you have to go that deep. Remove the auto lock hub housing and disassemble... Clean the parts and repack with grease (bearing grease should be fine). Make sure to lay the parts out in order and direction of installation and you can't go wrong... If you mix something up, you have the other side for reference. Just go slow and pay attention.

one thing to be aware of: the hex studs sometimes break so soak them with some penetraiting oil over night and then be easy with them. i've prersonally have never had that problem but i also do the above.

When you say on the fly, are you refering to selecting 4wd or locking the hubs. If you are selecting 4wd while moving then I would recomend you don't do it. Stop then select. Works for me.

Mine have almost always clunked when engaging 4 wheel drive, both in the Pathy and my old 720 Pickup. Never been a problem. That said, I've only shifted "on the fly" a couple times back in the day, and I'd 2nd VSicks and say stop and do it. If you're driving in conditions that require 4 wheel drive, you shouldn't be going too fast anyways, so a quick stop for 10 seconds is no biggie. At least its piece of mind if anything.
