More Advice, Please: Exhaust bolts

Dang I'm so self absorbed, all I think about is me, me, me, I'm always asking for help but not brave enough to give any YET.

That being said, I need some more advice.

I took the heat shield off the driver side, all bolts are in tacked and accounted for.

I did NOT tighten them for fear of breakage. I am hear an exhaust pop from this area, yes, after a few minutes of driving the pop lessons.

What is my next course of action?

Do I leave them alone?

Soak them in Blaster, try to remove them?

Try to tighten them? I'M SO CONFUSED.

Couldn't find a chicken so a used a crow, granite alter not available so I used the neighbors cement porch. (I wonder if that has anything to do with the "For Sale" sign in his yard this morning ?)

No goats head but the lodge down the street lent me their moose antlers.

I will say the dancing around the block gave me a thrill.

Is $200.00 really the standard rate to bail out of jail now days? WOW! It's gone up.

If it were me, and I was already in there, I'd take the old bolts out. If breakage is a major concern, and you're getting the cold 'tick tick tick' then I'd say get the bolts out, and put new ones in. Soak in PB Blaster or something similar for a day or so, and then try to pull the old bolts.

Well...if you do nothing, you run the risk of the manifold warping which will affect gas mileage and will ultimately require you to replace the manifold. If you remove or tighten the "bad" studs, you risk breakage which can also result in the above if you run it for too long like that.

You can get new "revised" manifold studs from Brown & Brown Nissan (Tempe, AZ - 800-237-0003) for $2.80 a piece. (Reg. $3.50) Nissan part # is 14065-V5004. I'm the kind of guy that likes to do it right...you can order new nuts (P/N 14039-W1500) for $.32/ea (Reg. $.40) and new washers (P/N 14037-V5005) for $1.38/ea (Reg. $1.72). You could certainly reuse the nuts & washers you have now - they were never a problem. You'll also want to replace the gasket - ~$20.00/ea side from Nissan - but FelPro makes a decent replacement (P/N MS92271) at $18 for both sides.

Like you mentioned, soak 'em in blaster for a few days. Even with that, they may break and you may need to take more extreme measures to get 'em out. Or, you can just say "F-it" and leave 'em in. CaseyT runs a rig with only 2 studs holding one of the manifolds on.

Then again, you could do like a lot of us and just order headers to go along with this project and get some HP/MPG to boot. The way I see it, if you're replacing a manifold, might as well upgrade. The cost to replace both manifolds is very close to the cost of the headers + install.

Well...I said a lot and didn't really tell you what to do. You've got options...now you gotta choose what's best for you.

Let me add that I would NOT try re-torquing the stock studs unless you are prepared to deal with some breaking. You say that the leak lessens when it warms up but does not go away. Thats my rule of thumb, if it does not go away, you need to address it. Mine taps sometimes for the first 2-3 minutes but nothing when it warms up so I'm ignoring it in hopes of putting on headers next year.

Otherwise, I agree with everything said above...

LMAO !! That just gives me a GREAT mental image !!!

I think bail varies depending on where you are, how many times you have been arrested and just how heinous the crime... I'd say $200 was a good price. :P

CaseyT runs a rig with only 2 studs holding one of the manifolds on.

This has been corrected to, Just one stud is broken. Installed a used decked manifold with no gasket. Was not able to remove one of the broken studs.

The tapping remains after everything has warmed up?????? imo should be addressed ASAP.... it may not be the manifold leaking either... is it the exhaust tap or something else needs to be found out.
