R50 Ticking Sound? (2001, 3.5)

Hi...

I used to have a '94 SE Manual, and now I have a 2001 SE Manual. I had the exhaust manifold tick on my '94, which always went away when the engine warmed up. I have a very similar noise (but not exactly the same) on my '01, and I cannot figure it out. The noise is somewhat inconsistant...it seems to do it more when the engine is warm. It only ticks under accelaration and most noticably between 2200 and 3000 rpm. It doesn't seem to tick in neutral, so only when the engine is under load. I don't think it's pre-detonation because I'm running premium fuel. I have also tried a fuel treatment/injector cleaner that was recommended by a trusted mechanic. SO....am I looking at a lifter noise? If so, what are the implications of that? The motor has 69k miles on it and runs great...pulls hard etc. I just 1) don't want to cause engine damage by not getting this fixed, and 2) need to eliminate this noise that is DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

Thanks in advance for the help...

How often do you change your oil?

What type of oil do you use?

It sounds to me like it could very well be valve clatter. I haven't heard anything about this being a common issue, so I don't think it is. Hopefully with the two questions I have answered, we can help you a little more accurately.

Thanks for the response. I want to answer your questions and also revise/clarify a few things:

The noise happens most noticably between 1800 and 3400 rpm and absolutely only under a load (acceleration). At 3400, it pretty much stops.

It almost sounds like somebody is in the dash with a plastic stick beating on the plastic dash.

On the drive to work this morning (30 min or so), the ticking happened almost from the get go, but about 3 minutes from the office, it suddenly stopped. It seems very random, and not related to engine temperature that I can tell.

Oil...right now it is running dino 5w30, but I am a huge believer in synthetics (don't want to start the dreaded oil debate, but personal experience...) and am switching the Pathy to Mobil1 5w30 or 10w30 at the next interval (Pathy is relatively new to me). I change dino oil every 3k miles and synthetic every 5-7500. If anybody wants to chime in on the 5w30 vs 10w30 vs 10w40 debate I'd love some advice. I live in Denver where we have a couple of weeks (total) below freezing and very few days, if any, below 0F. The Pathy is garage-kept.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on the noise and/or the oil... :)

Bump...with update.

I changed oil to Mobil 1, changed oil filter, and cleaned and oiled K&N filter...no change at all to the ticking noise. So switching to premium fuel and synthetic oil did basically nothing.

Does anybody have any ideas for me?! Though the Pathfinder seems to fun pretty well, the noise is driving me up a freakin' tree :furious:

Thanks....

Dude near me at an Autozone has a 2004 Fronty, nearly same noise he is going back with a little steam since he has on ly put 14k on truck...I'll let you know any info I get if I get it first!!! He seems to blame the bottom of the motor for this noise but i agree it sounds like a V6 chevy kackling!! My truck 98 Pathy sounds this way only when revving under no load as the RPMs fall in about the same range she has a light (really light ) clicking. I just figured my valves need love.

If it were valve noise wouldn't I hear it all the time and not just under load? If I pop the hood and give 'er some throttle (in neutral obviously) I hear absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Could I be hearing lifters?

lifters would normally tick when you first started then, as oil circulated, would quiet down. If you are on teh hairy edge of where your timing should be, you can certainly get a knock under load. You might consider a half degree adjustment toward TDC and see if that clears teh knock without sacraficing power.
