I have Problem and was wondering if any of you have ever had this problem. I have a 1995 Patherfinder V6SE and I just drove from Colorado Springs,CO to Moscow, Idaho. Now, Whenever I would go up extended inclines(Big Hills) My nissan would start to heat up quickly, then stay at the top of the Temp Gauge. I tried and checked multiple things. My coolant was good, Going up the hills, I would downshift,Overdrive off.... I dont know what to think about it....Any suggestions?

What about the fan clutch? Driving up hill, the engine is working harder and it's likely getting less over all air flow.

 

Does it do it if you just let the truck sit running at idle for a long period of time?

 

Might listen for that. Start it up and let it run, when it reaches operating temp (or soon after) you should be able to hear the difference in the speed of the cooling fan when it kicks on.

 

If not, then that's likely your problem.

i think B mentioned that the fan should have some resitance when cold.. not too much, not too little.. how about that for precise.. :lol:

When the truck/fan clutch is cold (we'll assume the scientic standard of 68F or 20C) and you try to spin the fan (clutch) it shouldn't freewheel more than about 1/4 turn . Also, when you start it, you shouls be able to hear a difference in fan noise in about 15-45 seconds or so... The fan clutch usually effects temperature at idle as when in motion the wind blowing through the radiator provides the air flow. Your thermostat could be stuck or obstructed. Also, what does the inside of the radiator look like ? And scale or corrosion ? That will insulate it and reduce the efficiency.

Do you want it in Newtons or should I calculate the coefficient of friction for you ? Sheesh, some people !! :D
