Brake Lights Stay On - Please Help

Hi gang,

 

I have a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 whose battery had been constantly going dead. My neighbor just happened to notice that the brake lights never turn off.

 

I have read that there is a brake switch but have no idea where it is located or if this could even be the problem.

 

My mechanical skills are limited...although you guys have talked me through changing my starter so the more detail the better.

Hey man. I had this problem on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee I had. It is the Brake Light switch. Not only are your brake lights sometimes staying on after driving, but they also stay on while driving, like you are riding the brakes and left-foot driving. Mine was located under the lower dash panel in the driver's foot well, near the OBD-II port. No clue of where the Pathy's is, but it should be near there. Hope you have a good back, but not a difficult job; mine was plug and play.

 

The Jeep switch was $32 at the dealer. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at my Haynes manual and it does a pretty crappy job at telling me where the brake switch is located and what it looks like. Can anyone tell me where and what to look for?

It's right above the brake pedal under the dash. Lie on your floor, move the brake pedal and you'll see it touch the switch. Very easy to get to.

It turns out that the Pathfinder has two brake switches. I imagine for the front and rear brakes. I took both out and replaced them and the problem still occures. Ater poking around I noticed that the brake pedal has two small holes drilled in the metal that allow the switches to pass through...well I then noticed a few broken pieces of plastic laying around the driver's side floor.

 

It turns out that the broken plastic pieces are a mold that fits into the holes NOT allowing the brake switches to pass through the two holes. So... can the plastic piece that fills the brake pedal holes be purchased...and if so, what is this piece called.

That does not sound right.

brake petal brake light switch stops (contacts)??? You got me !! I looked at my 95 and it seems that you could just plug the holes (epoxy, wood dowel formed for tight fit, etc) then adjust the switches for the right position. Seems like a simple fix. If you dont like that idea, go to the stealership and look at their microfiche,,, GL bud !

One switch is for cancelling the cruise control, the other is for the brake lights.
