jimbob
Hi, after installing a new timing belt I noticed my crank pully timing marks are at the 9:00 position. I figured my balancer had spun so I ordered a new one but its the same way. Keyway on the crank is at 11:00 but the marks on the balancer are at 9:00, not 12:00. jimbob
My balancer, on the left, with the crank keyway @11:00 puts my timing marks @9:00 !?!?, the one on the right, from youtube, with the crank keyway @11:00, puts their timing marks at 12:00 where they are suppose to be.. do I have the wrong balancer? I ordered a new one for my 97 3.3 pathy and its same as my old one.
jimbob
does it really matter if it has spun? The 'new' balancer might have just been cleaned up and painted.
adamzan
Have you verified the timing belt is set correctly? If you need to be sure, it should be 40 teeth between the camshaft marks and 43 between drivers cam and the crank. This is with it set at TDC for #1 cylinder. Yes, 43 teeth from cam to crank will put the crank timing mark at about 5:25, this results in the crankshaft keyway being at about 11:00 as described above, so when balancer goes on the timing marks should be about 12:00 not 9:00. The truck runs, rough but runs. I can't set the time using the timing marks. I made my own mark, green dot in my photo above. I don't know if this will cause a problem or not. It's a brand new balancer, supposedly for a 97 pathy. The old balancer that was on the truck is the same way as the new one. I read a post where someone else had this exact same issue but a fix was never posted.
Slartibartfast
That is bizarre. I had a look at harmonic balancers on Rockauto, and the ones that showed the timing marks appeared to show them in the same place as the picture on the right. Same story for Quest, Fronty, and X balancers. NPD pulls up the same PN for a '96 as for an '01. I thought maybe the Elgrand (the only other rig with a VG33 AFAIK) had its timing pointer off to the side, but Partsouq lists the same balancer for that application. Partsouq has a picture of that part, which appears to match the balancer from the video. I would assume the manufacturer of your new one screwed up, but then why was the old one the same? Unless it had been previously replaced, with the same defective (?) product, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If both had slipped, I would not expect them to have slipped the same amount. If everything is correct inside the timing cover, then IMO you've got the right idea making your own marks on the balancer. Just make sure you get them in the right place. There are a few videos on Youtube for doing this on hotrods, including working out the distance between the degree marks.
jimbob
While looking for the miss I opened up the ECU and there's a burn spot right in the center on backside of board. I'm guessing this is the miss. How critical is getting the exact number matching ecu.. is close okay. I have a MECM-W185 E1, I found several MECM-W187's tks again
