Automatic 4x4 not engaging

So I bought my 2003 LE from my Grandfather last fall. So far its been alright to me other than the 4x4 not working. It's been to now two different shops and both have said different things. First said it was the 4x4 control motor, which I ordered refurbished and had installed, didn't solve the issue. Went to mechanic 2 who thinks my front hubs are stuck which prevents it from engaging. I then asked him if he could "unstick" them and he gave me some BS excuse to get my hoopty out of his bay. I'm out of ideas at this point and tired of paying $200 to have someone look at it and tell my its broken. If anyone else has had the issue with the 2003 LE switch button 4x4 please let me know if you found the solution.

Can you tell me why it's not working? Can you verify that the switch is powering the relay to the motor?

Did you test the motor prior to installing and checked the old one? Check fuses? Should be a simple fix.

Unless yours is special. Your hubs are stuck. But they are stuck in always engaged because that is how they came from the factory.

 

I agree with cuong start with the electrical system then move forward.

Do you have the factory service manual where you could follow the troubleshooting steps? They used to be available on the internet for download

You could've told that 2nd mechanic to "stick it" because he doesn't know what he's dealing with.

 

I think we need more details. Thesystem has its own brains, so if something is malfunctioning, it'll trigger some lights on the cluster. Does it do anything when you turn the switch (lights, noise, etc.)?
